Sesame Street introduced Julia, a character who has autism, to help children understand that people may experience and interact with the world in different ways. Julia might respond differently in conversations, take a little longer to warm up socially, or have unique ways of engaging in play, but she is also a caring friend, creative, and deeply connected to others in her own way.
What I appreciate about this approach is how it normalizes differences without framing them as something to ‘fix.’ Instead, it helps kids learn that communication, friendship, and empathy can look many different ways and all of them are valid.
