I recently stumbled upon this hand-me-down book from my mom (copyright 1968...way before I was born!) that I found useful when my daughter was younger. While some info was outdated (like using wooden cheese boxes (??) for play containers and using shellac to waterproof materials), there are so many gems in What To Do When "There's Nothing to Do" that get back to some good basics for play and fun at home and on the road. There are familiar favorites like imaginative play, sorting, painting, puzzles, books, macaroni necklaces, etc...but here are 5 of my favorite screen-free, allergen friendly, budget friendly, clean up friendly gems from this book to try out during the long hot month of July!

Whether you're reading or listening to books, they are a great way to maintain and grow speech and language skills. Summer is a great time to explore new books or revisit some of your old favorites! Local libraries often have great summer reading programs for kids to keep them engaged in reading between school years. Here are some links to some local Denver area reading programs.
