Currently taking new pediatric patients for virtual speech-language interventions, coaching, and consulting. Serving patients B-21 years of age, as well as coaching and consulting parents, families, and caregivers. Home-based or in-office services will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Service areas:

About me:
Hello! I am Whitney Kramer, MA, CCC-SLP. I graduated with my BA and MA from the University of Iowa, and I have been an ASHA certified, pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in Iowa City and surrounding areas since 2012. My clinical experience has included speech, language, stuttering, social skills, and AAC, using a variety of service delivery models, including direct intervention, group interventions, coaching, and consulting. We relocated from Iowa City to Park Hill, Denver in June 2023! I love being a tiny piece of the puzzle in supporting a child's progress.

My lil guy is 13 months. As an SLP, people ask me all the time about his first words. Truthfully, I hadn't even written them down yet! He is imitating a TON, but these are his first words that he used independently.

What do you notice? Any surprises?

Aldrin loves food, climbing, and independence. He is a social butterfly and is a chaos monster. Any guesses for his next words?

"But it is just so cute"

I often hear this from parents when referring to their child's speech errors. Here are some things to consider...

-The longer the child talks with that speech pattern, the harder it will be to change.

-Will this still be cute when the child is 10? How about 20?

-YOU may understand your child just fine, but can others?

-Are peers noticing a difference?

What do speech and basketball have in common?
“perfect practice makes perfect” 🤩

Just like sports, improving speech sounds takes practice.
Practice should be frequent, if not daily.

AND you want to practice correctly!
Incorrect practice just further supports the incorrect motor plan.

Would you practice missing the hoop in basketball?
Nope! You would aim for high repetitions of great form and getting that swish.
Just like speech!

I recently shared a story from another SLP about pacifiers, and I received many messages. Here is my understanding on pacifiers and speech-language development....

Prolonged pacifier use may impact speech and language development!

Pacifiers can lead to reduced babbling. Children have less practice making and playing around with the sounds.

Pacifiers can lead to different tongue movements, oral motor development, and structural development (such as open bite).

Pacifiers are linked to speech sound errors, such as lateral lisps, due to talking around the pacifier.

Pacifiers may reduce back-and-forth interaction due to the lack of immediacy in the interaction.

EVERY child is different. Finding a balance is key.

If your child still has a pacifier, try having them remove it while talking and during highly interactive activities.

Did my only child use a pacifier? YES!
When did I stop giving my child a pacifier? Around 6-7 months
Why? He had HFM, and it was awful! It seemed like a natural time to progress to other chewies and he tolerated it just fine. He was also starting to increase is babbling.
Will I ever give it back? Aldrin is only 11 months old. At this point, I don't plan to, but who knows?!
