Spring Running & Hiking Season Is Here — Don’t Let a Stress Fracture Slow You Down

As we trade winter for Colorado sunshine, many of us are hitting the trails and pavement again. But with increased mileage and elevation comes a common overuse injury: stress fractures.

Unlike a sudden break, stress fractures develop over time from repetitive impact — creating tiny cracks in the bone that worsen without proper recovery. They’re especially common in the shin, foot, heel, femur, and pelvis, and runners and hikers are at higher risk due to repetitive loading and uneven terrain.

⚠️ Watch for these warning signs:
• Pain that starts during activity
• Tenderness in one specific spot
• Mild swelling
• Pain that worsens the longer you train

Prevention Tips:
✔️ Increase mileage or elevation by no more than 10% per week
✔️ Mix in cross-training (cycling, swimming, strength training)
✔️ Take rest days seriously
✔️ Wear proper, supportive footwear
✔️ Fuel your body with enough protein, calcium & vitamin D
✔️ Strength train to protect your bones and joints
