What you see: my body (teaaa I know, period 👏🏼)
What you don’t see: the years of chronic stress that body endured in the form of caretaking, picking between groceries or gas, scrambling to figure out how to pay rent, grieving, working 3-5 jobs at a time still not making ends meet, pulling over on the side of the road to talk myself down from panic attacks, debilitating migraines & my account being in the negative for weeks at a time, to name a few.
When I meet new people and they ask what I do, sometimes I wince internally as I share that I’m a fitness coach (as if fitness isn’t for all bodies). But I know the assumptions we can make with little to no information about a person.
Here’s the reality for a lot of people, as was for me- if the body doesn’t feel safe to lose weight, it won’t. It doesn’t matter how much calorie counting or tracking you’re doing. It doesn’t matter how frequently you’re hitting the gym. In fact, sometimes those might be the very things working against you. What your body should perceive as “healthy” is actually perceiving as additional stress because it’s already over-burdened by the stress it’s currently carrying. If your body is not in an optimal state of homeostasis, then it is constantly striving to get there. Until it’s there, it will not thrive as it should. We can only live in survival mode for so long before it catches up to us.
