☀️💧 Beat the Heat with Healthy Hydration! 💧☀️

Hot summer days mean more time outside—but they also mean a greater risk of dehydration and heat-related illness, especially for children.
Here are a few simple ways to help keep your family safe:

💙 Choose water first! Water is the best drink to keep kids hydrated. Offer it often—even before they say they're thirsty.

🧃 Skip the sugary drinks. Water helps your child's body stay cool without the added sugar found in many juices and sports drinks.

🧢 Dress for the weather. Lightweight, light-colored clothing, hats, and sunscreen can help protect your child from the sun.

🌳 Take cool-down breaks. Plan outdoor play in the morning or evening when temperatures are lower, and be sure to rest in the shade or air conditioning throughout the day.

🚗 Never leave a child in a parked car. Even for a minute, temperatures inside a vehicle can become dangerously hot.

⚠️ Know the warning signs. Watch for excessive thirst, dizziness, headache, fatigue, nausea, or unusual sleepiness. If your child becomes confused, has trouble staying awake, or stops sweating in the heat, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Keeping a reusable water bottle nearby and encouraging regular water breaks can make a big difference all summer long!
Stay cool, stay hydrated, and enjoy a safe summer! ☀️💙

🦠 What Parents Need to Know About Cyclosporiasis 🦠

Have you heard about recent reports of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that can cause prolonged diarrhea? The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reminds families that while anyone can get this infection, there are simple steps you can take to help protect your child.

✅ What is cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Children become infected by eating food or drinking water contaminated with the parasite, most commonly through fresh produce. The infection is not usually spread directly from person to person.

🔍 Symptoms to Watch For:
The most common symptom is watery diarrhea, which may be severe and can come and go over time.
Other symptoms may include: • Loss of appetite • Nausea • Stomach cramps • Bloating and gas • Fatigue • Weight loss • Low-grade fever • Vomiting • Headache • Muscle aches

Without treatment, symptoms can last for several weeks or even months.

📞 When to Call Your Pediatrician Contact your child's pediatrician if they develop prolonged watery diarrhea, especially during the summer months or after travel.

🥗 Prevention Tips Help reduce your family's risk by: ✔️ Washing fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating ✔️ Practicing good hand hygiene ✔️ Using safe drinking water, especially when traveling

These healthy habits can help protect against cyclosporiasis and other foodborne illnesses.

💙 Most children recover well, but recognizing symptoms early and staying hydrated are important. If you have concerns about your child, reach out to your pediatric care team.

🦟☀️ Bug Bite Protection for Kids: What Parents Should Know

Warmer weather means more time outside—and more opportunities for insect bites. Mosquitoes and ticks can do more than cause itchy bumps; they can sometimes spread illnesses.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends using EPA-registered insect repellents when children may be exposed to biting insects. Products containing DEET or picaridin are considered safe and effective when used as directed.

A few quick reminders:
✔️ Apply repellent only to exposed skin and the outside of clothing.
✔️ Avoid putting repellent on children's hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, or irritated skin.
✔️ Wash repellent off with soap and water once your child comes indoors.
✔️ Use mosquito netting over strollers and infant carriers when possible.
✔️ Dress children in long sleeves, pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes when insects are active.
Important:
❗ Do not use products containing oil of lemon eucalyptus on children younger than 3 years old.
❗ Avoid combination sunscreen/insect repellent products, since sunscreen needs to be reapplied more often than insect repellent.
Before heading outdoors, take a few moments to protect your family from bug bites so everyone can enjoy a safe and healthy summer! 🌳🦋

🌊☀️ Pool Safety Starts with YOU! ☀️🌊

Summer fun is here, and we LOVE seeing our kids enjoy the water 💙 But did you know that drowning can happen quickly and quietly—even when others are nearby?

Let’s keep our little swimmers safe with these AAP-recommended tips:

👀 Always Watch Closely
Designate a “Water Watcher” and stay within arm’s reach of young or inexperienced swimmers—no phones, no distractions!

🚧 Create Layers of Protection
Use a 4-sided fence with a self-latching gate around pools to prevent unsupervised access.

🛟 Use Life Jackets (not floaties!)
Choose approved life jackets for safety—air-filled toys are NOT a substitute.

🏊 Start Swim Lessons When Ready
Swim skills are important, and many children can begin lessons after age 1.

❤️ Be Ready for Emergencies
Learn CPR—quick action can save a life while waiting for help.

💡 Reminder for Parents & Caregivers
Most young children who drown were not expected to be in the water—kids can slip away in seconds.

✅ The best protection = multiple safety layers + constant supervision

Let’s make this a safe and splash-filled summer! 💦💙

💉 Why Does My Baby Need Vitamin K After Birth? 💉

One of the first things we recommend after a baby is born is a Vitamin K shot. While it may seem like a small step, it plays a big role in keeping newborns safe.

Babies are born with very low levels of Vitamin K, a nutrient that helps blood clot properly. Without enough Vitamin K, newborns can be at risk for serious bleeding, known as Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB). This bleeding can happen internally, including in the brain, and may occur without any warning signs.

The good news? A single Vitamin K injection given shortly after birth is highly effective at preventing VKDB and has been safely used for decades.

Some important facts:
✅ All babies are born with low Vitamin K levels.
✅ Breast milk contains only small amounts of Vitamin K.
✅ Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding can occur weeks or even months after birth.
✅ The Vitamin K shot provides protection during this vulnerable period.

As pediatricians, we strongly support Vitamin K administration at birth because it is a safe, simple, and effective way to help protect your baby from a preventable medical emergency.

Have questions about newborn care? We’re always happy to talk with you and help you make informed decisions for your family. ❤️

Newborn infants are usually given vitamin K soon after birth to prevent a life-threatening disease called hemorrhagic disease of the newborn. Learn more here.

☀️🌈 School's Out and Summer's Here! Let’s Talk Sun Safety 🌞👒

Warm weather means more time for kids to play outside—and we LOVE that! 💛 But protecting little ones from the sun is key to keeping that playtime safe and fun.

✅ Top sun safety tips (backed by the American Academy of Pediatrics):

🧴 Sunscreen matters!
Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) on exposed skin—and don’t forget ears, feet, and backs of knees! Reapply every 2 hours or after swimming/sweating.

👕 Cover up when you can
Lightweight clothing, wide-brim hats, and sunglasses help protect delicate skin and eyes.

🌳 Seek shade
Try to stay in the shade when possible—especially between 10 AM and 4 PM, when UV rays are strongest.

👶 Extra care for babies
Infants under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight whenever possible.

⏱️ Plan ahead
Apply sunscreen about 15–30 minutes before heading outside for best protection!

💡 Did you know?
Sun protection in childhood helps reduce the risk of skin cancer later in life.

Let’s keep our kiddos safe while they soak up the FUN (not the sunburn 😉)!
