1. “Something is wrong with me.”
So many people with ADHD don’t just struggle with executive functioning — they’ve learned to believe something is fundamentally wrong with them just because they don’t function like neurotypicals.
2. I’m stupid.”
Many people with ADHD genuinely believe they’re stupid, even when they’re incredibly intelligent. Years of struggling in environments that reward consistency, organization, obedience, memory, and sustained attention can make them question their intelligence.
3. Chronic guilt.
Many people with ADHD carry an enormous amount of guilt. Guilt for being late. Forgetting. Procrastinating. Not texting back. Not following through. Resting when there are things to do. Even when they’re genuinely trying their best.
4. Apologizing for existing.
So many people with ADHD apologize for simply existing. They apologize for talking too much, forgetting, needing clarification, being emotional, changing the subject, taking up space, or asking for help — sometimes before anyone has even indicated they’ve done something wrong.
5. Making themselves smaller.
So many people with ADHD have learned to make themselves smaller. They’ve been told they’re too loud, emotional, sensitive, intense, talkative, needy, or scattered — until eventually they start believing they’re too much.
6. Feeling chronically misunderstood.
So many people with ADHD feel like no one understands how hard they’re actually trying. Other people see the lateness, procrastination, forgetfulness, or unfinished tasks. They don’t see the mental effort, frustration, and exhaustion underneath it.
7. Many people with ADHD feel like they’re constantly disappointing someone.
Even when no one is upset with them, they may be waiting for someone to be disappointed because they’ve spent years feeling like they forgot something, missed something, or didn’t do enough.
