Saint Joseph Hospital was founded in 1873 by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, as one of the first private hospitals in Colorado.

Saint Joseph Hospital, now part of Intermountain Healthcare, is a 400-bed hospital in Denver, Colorado serving the healthcare needs of people throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Preparedness starts long before an emergency. Saint Joe’s Hospital Emergency Response team, caregivers and volunteers held our annual decontamination drill to test our readiness and procedures for a large-scale chemical agent exposure.
While these events are rare, practicing our response helps us act quickly and effectively, provide appropriate care for patients, and keep caregivers safe. This preparation strengthens our hospital’s readiness and helps protect the community when it matters most.

A legend has retired!
For 40 years, Chris Vittum answered a calling to serve the mission of Saint Joseph Hospital. She dedicated her career to ensuring patients receive safe, exceptional care while empowering nurses to grow, lead and thrive. Her contributions as a nurse, educator, mentor and Clinical Excellence director have helped shape our culture, elevate the nursing profession and positively impact countless patients, families and caregivers.
This week, surrounded by colleagues, friends and family, we celebrated Chris and wished her a fond farewell. We were also honored to present her with the Lifetime DAISY Award, recognizing a nursing career defined by dedication to patient care, professional growth and the positive image of nursing. As Chris begins her next chapter, she leaves a remarkable legacy of quality, compassion and leadership.
Chris, hospital leaders and caregivers across Saint Joe’s are deeply grateful for your 40 years of extraordinary service and your many contributions to our hospital and community. Thank you for all you have done for the Saint Joe’s family. We will miss you tremendously and hope you enjoy a wonderful, well-deserved retirement!

During a recent Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day event held at Saint Joseph Hospital, Rick went above and beyond behind the scenes to ensure every detail was taken care of, every challenge was solved, and every guest had a positive experience. From supporting speakers and musical performers to handling last-minute needs with a smile, Rick demonstrated what it means to believe in what we do, serve with empathy, and recognize that we are better together.
