TMS is a treatment cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for patients suffering from depression* who have not achieved

satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant treatment. TMS stands for “transcranial magnetic stimulation.”

TMS is a treatment that can be performed in a psychiatrist’s office, under their supervision, using a medical device called Brainsway deep TMS. It does not require any anesthesia or sedation, as the patient remains awake and alert during the treatment.
• Non-systemic, meaning that it is not taken by mouth and does not circulate in the blood stream throughout the body. The typical initial treatment course consists of 5 treatments per week over a 4-6 week period, for an average of 20-30 total treatments. TMS is indicated for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to achieve satisfactory improvement from one prior antidepressant medication at or above the minimal effective dose and duration in the current episode. What are the benefits and risks of TMS? TMS has been demonstrated to be safe and tolerable. Over 10,000 active treatments were safely performed during the clinical trials.

• No side effects such as weight gain, sexual problems, stomach problems, sleepiness, or dry mouth were seen during trials
• There were no negative effects on memory or ability to concentrate

The most commonly reported side effect related to treatment was scalp pain or discomfort during the treatment session. This side effect was generally mild to moderate, and occurred less frequently after the first week of treatment.

A typical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) session is straightforward and easy to fit into your day. Most sessions last between 20–40 minutes, depending on the treatment protocol being used.

You’ll sit comfortably while a helmet-like device is positioned against your scalp, delivering gentle magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain. Many patients describe the sensation as a light tapping or tingling on the head. You’ll remain awake and aware the entire time.

It’s important to note that different TMS protocols may vary in session length and sensation, so your experience may differ based on your personalized treatment plan.

If antidepressants haven’t worked the way you hoped, or the side effects have made them hard to stick with, you’re not alone. Many people find that medications don’t provide enough relief or come with challenges that impact daily life.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) offers a different approach. Instead of affecting the whole body, it targets specific areas of the brain involved in mood. For those who haven’t had success with traditional treatments, TMS may be a next step worth exploring.
