When chemotherapy stopped working, Dan found another option at Colorado Blood Cancer Institute: CAR T-cell therapy.

Today, Dan is doing well, enjoying the outdoors and spending time with the family who supported him throughout his treatment.

For patients with blood cancer, donors can be a lifeline.

Our very own Dr. Michael Tees and registered nurse Destiny Humphrey recently spoke with Denver7 about the need for blood, platelet and stem cell donors and the important role these donations can play throughout blood cancer treatment.

Destiny sees that impact firsthand in her work with patients at Colorado Blood Cancer Institute. She is also using her platform as Miss Aurora to raise awareness about blood cancer and encourage more people to consider becoming donors.

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness of leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood cancers.

More than **1.3 million people worldwide are diagnosed with a blood cancer each year**, and someone receives a diagnosis approximately every three minutes.

Knowing the warning signs matters. Persistent fatigue, frequent infections, unexplained bruising or bleeding, night sweats, swollen lymph nodes and unexplained weight loss are among the symptoms that may warrant a conversation with your doctor.

At Colorado Blood Cancer Institute, advancing care is part of what we do every day. Through our partnership with the HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Cancer Network, our team participates in clinical trials studying new approaches for leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other blood disorders. These studies help move promising treatments from research into patient care.

For Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing the stories of patients who remind us that living with blood cancer is about so much more than a diagnosis.

Mark has been living with multiple myeloma since 2015. After years of treatment, including a bone marrow transplant and CAR T-cell therapy at Colorado Blood Cancer Institute, he continues to focus on what matters most: relationships, gratitude and living well.

“This is my life. My life includes living with cancer; it’s no different than saying I’m left-handed,” he says. “The only control we have is our attitude.”

Blood cancer can change a life in an instant. So can the care that follows.

This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing Jack Northrup’s story. At just 30 years old, Jack was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after what initially seemed like a stubborn sore throat quickly became something much more serious.

He came to Colorado Blood Cancer Institute, where he underwent intensive chemotherapy and ultimately a stem cell transplant under the care of Tara Gregory, MD, and Michael Maris, MD.

Today, Jack is more than 15 years cancer-free, raising two sons with his wife and making the most of the second chance he says he’ll never take for granted.
