June is PTSD Awareness Month

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are often discussed separately, but for many Veterans, service members, and first responders, they occur together.

Why?

The same event that causes a brain injury, such as a blast exposure, vehicle accident, fall, or other traumatic incident, can also be psychologically distressing. In addition, changes in the brain caused by TBI can affect emotional regulation, stress responses, and coping skills, making recovery even more complex.

TBI and PTSD also share many symptoms, including:
• Difficulty concentrating and memory problems
• Irritability and mood changes
• Anxiety and depression
• Sleep disturbances and fatigue
• Social withdrawal and feeling disconnected

At the same time, there are important differences.

Symptoms more commonly associated with TBI include headaches, dizziness, and sensitivity to light or noise. PTSD is more often characterized by flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and feelings of shame or guilt related to a traumatic experience.

Because these conditions can overlap so significantly, accurate diagnosis and integrated treatment are critical.

At the Marcus Institute for Brain Health, our interdisciplinary team addresses both the physical and psychological impacts of trauma, helping patients understand what they're experiencing and providing the tools needed to move forward.

Healing begins with understanding.

While approximately 3.6% of U.S. adults experience PTSD in a given year, rates among Veterans can reach 20% following combat deployments, and as many as one in seven first responders experience PTSD related to their work.

Behind every statistic is a person who answered the call to serve others.

At the Marcus Institute for Brain Health, we provide individualized, evidence-based care for Veterans, active-duty service members, and first responders living with the invisible wounds of traumatic brain injury and psychological health conditions. Through our interdisciplinary approach, we help patients regain confidence, reconnect with their families, and rediscover purpose.
Healing is possible. Recovery is possible. No one should have to face these challenges alone.

Memorial Day is more than just a long weekend. It reminds us that our freedom comes at a cost, paid by those who chose to serve something greater than themselves.

Today, we honor the men and women who did not return home, the families who feel that loss every day, and the lasting legacy of service that endures even after the uniform is put away.

At the Marcus Institute for Brain Health, we have the privilege of walking alongside veterans and service members whose lives have been forever changed by their service. Their resilience reminds us that remembrance is not just about looking back. It is about how we continue to honor those sacrifices through care, compassion, and community.

This Memorial Day, let us take a moment to remember not just how they died, but also how they lived, served, and loved.

The Marcus Institute for Brain Health is seeking a temporary, full-time Speech-Language Pathologist to join our interdisciplinary care team.

At MIBH, speech-language pathology sits at the center of cognitive-communication recovery for individuals navigating traumatic brain injury and psychological health challenges. Our SLPs work side by side with neurology, behavioral health, physical therapy, and integrative care to deliver truly coordinated, patient-centered care.

This role is focused on:
• Cognitive-communication assessment and intervention
• Supporting speech, voice, and swallowing needs as indicated
• Partnering with patients and families to build sustainable communication strategies
• Collaborating across disciplines to address the full picture of recovery
• Contributing to a care model designed to improve cognitive function, auditory processing, and real-world communication

You will be part of a team that does not work in silos. You will be part of a team that challenges what care can look like.

If you are looking for work that is clinically rigorous, deeply collaborative, and grounded in purpose, we would love to connect.

Ray’s story is one of hope and healing. It is also one we hear time and time again.

When someone walks through our doors, they are often carrying the weight of invisible injuries, unanswered questions, and a sense that things may never change. What Ray’s journey reminds us is simple, but powerful:

Healing is possible.

Through individualized, interdisciplinary care, we see patients reclaim clarity, rebuild connections, and rediscover a sense of purpose. Progress does not always look the same for everyone, but the outcome is consistent. Lives are changed.

Ray’s story is not the exception. It is a reflection of what can happen when the right care meets the right moment.
