🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Suzanne Killmer 🌟
Suzanne Killmer's connection to Centus spans more than 35 years and three generations of family involvement in the Solihten Network.

"It is in the Killmer genes!" Suzanne says. Since 1990, she and her family have supported the organization's mission in countless ways—from volunteering at fundraisers to serving on staff and in leadership roles. After retiring to Denver, Suzanne was honored to join the Centus Board of Directors while her husband, Mark, became a spiritual consultant with Centus.

One of the most rewarding parts of Suzanne's board service has been seeing firsthand the impact of Centus' Susan's School of Counseling program. "Providing counseling where students spend much of their day makes such a difference," she shares. Suzanne also serves on the committee that organizes Centus' annual fundraiser, helping ensure that children and families can access counseling regardless of their ability to pay.

Outside of volunteering, Suzanne and Mark enjoy road biking, hiking, and exploring national parks throughout the western United States. "The mountains, blue skies, and miles of bike trails are what drew us to Denver," she says.

When asked what she would want others to know about Centus, Suzanne's answer is simple: "For 35 years I have witnessed how this organization continues to grow because its heart is in the right place. It offers help and hope to those in need of healing, with a special focus on children's mental health."

Thank you, Suzanne, for your family’s decades of dedication and for helping ensure that more children and families have access to the mental health support they deserve. 💙

✨ Clinician Spotlight: Meet Zahria “Zee” Thomas, MSW

From sitting in on her mom's community college psychology classes as a child to helping clients recognize just how far they've come, Zee's passion for understanding people has shaped every step of her journey.

What she loves most about this work? Witnessing those breakthrough moments when clients begin to see their own growth and resilience. Those moments never get old.

Over the years, the heartfelt notes, texts, and small gifts she's received from clients and parents have served as meaningful reminders of the impact of this work and the privilege it is to walk alongside others in their healing journey.

Outside the office, you'll often find Zee practicing yoga, playing The Sims 4, or embracing a little harmless brain rot. She believes in playing just as hard as she works! After recently completing her Yoga Teacher Training, she's excited to continue growing her practice and thoughtfully explore ways to incorporate yoga into therapy while also teaching classes in the community.

We're so grateful to have Zee on the Centus team and can't wait to see the lives she'll continue to impact. 💙

EMDR doesn't start with processing trauma—it starts with building a foundation. One of the biggest misconceptions about EMDR is that clients jump right into difficult memories. In reality, preparation is one of the most important parts of the process. Before trauma reprocessing begins, many EMDR therapists help clients build the skills needed to feel safe, grounded, and supported throughout treatment.

The preparation hierarchy often looks something like this:
✨ Safe Enough to Feel – Developing the ability to experience difficult emotions without acting on impulse.
✨ Notice and Name – Learning to recognize what you're feeling and understand where those emotions are coming from.
✨ Feel and Flex – Building tolerance for discomfort while practicing healthy, adaptive coping strategies.
✨ Trust the Process – Once a strong therapeutic foundation is in place, EMDR reprocessing can begin. Trust isn't expected immediately—it's built through a safe, collaborative relationship with your therapist.

Healing isn't about rushing toward the hardest parts. It's about creating enough safety and stability that your mind and body are ready to do the work.

If you're curious about EMDR and wondering whether it might be a good fit for you, we're here to answer your questions.

Not every difficult experience stays in the past.

Sometimes it lingers in ways that are hard to explain—a racing heart in situations that should feel safe, a strong emotional reaction that seems to come out of nowhere, or memories that still feel as vivid as the day they happened.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy designed to help the brain process experiences that have become "stuck." Rather than simply talking about what happened, EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they lose their emotional intensity.

People often seek EMDR for trauma, but it can also be effective for anxiety, panic, grief, phobias, and other experiences that continue to affect daily life.

Healing doesn't mean forgetting what happened. It means the memory no longer has the same power over you.
If you've been carrying something that feels heavier than it should, you don't have to carry it alone. Contact Centus to learn more about EMDR and our counseling services.

✨ Clinician Spotlight: Meet Andrew Hobon, LCSW
Andrew became a therapist because he believes everyone deserves access to compassionate, quality mental health care. As both a therapist and social worker, he's passionate about helping people heal while contributing to a more equitable and supportive community.

One of Andrew's favorite parts of being a clinician is getting to truly know his clients. He believes therapy is a place where shame loses its power, compassion grows, and people discover new ways of understanding themselves and others.

One experience that continues to inspire his work involved helping a client process decades-old trauma through EMDR. Watching them reach a place of acceptance after carrying that pain for so many years reinforced Andrew's belief in the incredible resilience of the people he serves.

Outside the office, you'll likely find Andrew battling monsters in Monster Hunter, listening to house music, or enthusiastically talking about Daft Punk.

This year, Andrew is excited to continue expanding his expertise in trauma treatment, including advanced EMDR and other trauma-informed approaches, so he can help even more people find healing and hope.

We're grateful to have Andrew on the Centus team! 💙
