Not all sciatica comes from your spine.

When people feel that sharp, radiating pain shooting down the back of their leg, they immediately assume one thing:

“A slipped disc.”
“A nerve problem in my lower back.”
“Something serious in my spine.”

And yes—that can be true.

But here’s what most people completely miss:

You can have sciatica…
even when your spine is perfectly fine.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, one of the most overlooked causes of sciatic pain is something called piriformis syndrome—a condition where the nerve is compressed outside the spine.

Here’s what’s really happening:

The sciatic nerve—the largest nerve in your body—travels from your lower back, through your pelvis, and down your leg.

On its way, it passes either underneath or directly through a small but powerful muscle called the piriformis.

This muscle helps rotate your hip and stabilize your pelvis when you walk or move.

But when it becomes tight, overactive, or irritated…

It starts pressing directly onto the sciatic nerve.

Not at the spine.

Right in the middle of your glutes.
