Real questions from the forum this week πŸ’¬

"Is it okay to drink coffee or tea during the 28-day Leaky Gut Protocol, or should those be eliminated too?"

β˜•οΈ Dr. G's answer starts with the acidity - but the real story was a patient whose dizziness turned out to be caffeine all along. Nobody saw it coming, including her.

"I've been taking Liver Protect for years. Should I still take it?"

Milk thistle (what it's built on) has a strong safety record for long-term use. But Dr. G's answer wasn't just "yes, keep taking it" - there's a simple check-in he recommends that most people skip.

The full answers are waiting inside. It's your health - come get the whole picture.

Happy birthday to the man in the chef hat. πŸŽ‚ 40+ years as a functional medicine doctor, and he still listens like it's the first patient of the day - which is exactly why It's My Health exists.

That's exactly why we just launched a page where you pick the symptom that sounds like you, and Dr. G walks you through what it usually means.

One of my favorite things to do in the kitchen? Make compote. 🍎🍐

It's simple, it's delicious, and it's the best thing you can do with fruit that's a day or two from the compost bin. Instead of tossing it - transform it.

Here's how we do it: Jess and I chop up whatever's on the counter - apples, pears, whatever needs to be used - toss it in a pot with a little water and a squeeze of lemon juice, and let it simmer until it's soft and jammy. That's it. No added sugar needed when the fruit is ripe.

Now the fun part - what do you put it on?

πŸ₯ž Pancakes & waffles
πŸ₯£ Oatmeal or yogurt
🍨 Ice cream (yes, really)
πŸ§€ A cheese board
πŸ— Pork chops or roasted chicken
πŸ₯„ Or just eat it straight from the jar

Cooking doesn't have to be complicated to be good for you. Sometimes the simplest things are the ones that stick.

🧬 FLUOROQUINOLONE TOXICITY
Cipro. Levaquin. Avelox.

Antibiotics prescribed millions of times a year - yet some patients never recover.Muscle wasting. Tendon tears. Brain fog. Neuropathy.

The FDA has issued warnings, but most doctors still don't connect the dots. Why do some people get devastated while others are fine?

The answer may lie in a single enzyme: CYP1A2.Dr. Guillory has been studying this connection for decades.

We're talking about it inside the community.

πŸ”¬ What If Your "EDS" Diagnosis Is Actually Something Else?
Two diagnoses are on a collision course in medicine right now. One is being overstated. The other is being vastly underappreciated.

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome has become one of the most commonly rendered connective tissue diagnoses of the past decade. But how many of those diagnoses were made without the basic screening test required to confirm it?

Here is what most people do not know. There is a drug-induced connective tissue injury that looks remarkably like hEDS. Tendon damage at multiple sites. Joint instability. Chronic musculoskeletal pain. The symptoms are nearly identical.

The difference? One is genetic. The other was caused by a prescription.

The patients carrying the wrong label may never learn what actually happened to them, or that their next prescription of the same drug could make everything worse.

πŸ₯© Did You Know a Single Tick Bite Can Make You Allergic to Red Meat?

If you've ever had a mysterious allergic reaction hours after eating a hamburger or steak, this might be worth reading.

It's called Alpha-Gal Syndrome, and it's caused by the bite of a single tick. One bite can rewire your immune system so completely that red meat, something you've eaten your whole life without a second thought, becomes a trigger for hives, swelling, or even anaphylaxis.

The part that makes it so hard to diagnose? The reaction is delayed. Not minutes like a peanut allergy. Hours. People wake up at 2 a.m. in full allergic response with no idea that dinner was the cause.

Standard food allergy testing often misses it. Doctors suggest anxiety, IBS, stress. Meanwhile the answer is a tick bite nobody thought to ask about.

This condition wasn't even described in the medical literature until 2009. And with tick season here, the range of the tick responsible is expanding across the country.

❓ MEDICAL MYSTERIES | Caffeine & Morning Sickness
If you are sensitive to caffeine, you may be more likely to get morning sickness. Here is why.

There is an enzyme called CYP1A2 that clears caffeine from the body. People who are slow to metabolize caffeine have decreased activity with this enzyme. My observation is that this same decreased CYP1A2 activity may predispose someone to more persistent morning sickness during pregnancy.

For decades, medicine has taught that pregnancy reflux is a mechanical problem. The baby pushes the stomach up. But morning sickness peaks in the first trimester, when the baby is barely the size of a grape. The timing never made sense.

Until you look at the biochemistry.

β˜•οΈ Did You Know That CBD and Caffeine Can Cause Headaches?

If you've been getting unexplained headaches and you use CBD, read on.

As CBD edibles, gummies, and drinks have become more popular, this is a connection I noticed and decided to look into. Most people have no idea the two are related.

Caffeine works by blocking a brain chemical called adenosine, which is what makes you feel drowsy. It also causes a mild constriction of blood vessels in the brain.

When caffeine wears off, those vessels rebound and widen, which is what triggers the familiar caffeine withdrawal headache.
Here's where CBD comes in. CBD slows down the liver enzymes your body uses to clear caffeine from your bloodstream.

The net result is more caffeine in your system, staying there longer, and your blood vessels being pulled in two different directions at once.

When the caffeine finally clears, the rebound is bigger than it would have been on its own. That rebound can be the headache.

This isn't something you'll find widely discussed yet, but the mechanism makes pharmacological sense. If you regularly use both, just be aware of this connection.

You may not need to give caffeine or CBD, but knowing the connection is half the battle.
