You forgot what ‘normal’ feels like
Can’t remember the last pain-free day
This has become your identity
But it doesn’t have to be

Someone asks you “when did the pain start?” and you genuinely can’t remember anymore.

It’s been so long that you’ve forgotten what it feels like to wake up without immediately assessing your pain level.

You can’t remember what it was like to move freely without calculation.

The last time you felt truly comfortable in your body feels like a distant dream – maybe it never existed?

Pain has been your constant companion for so long that it’s become part of your identity.

You introduce yourself with it:

You plan your life around it. You make decisions based on it.

How bad is it today? Can I go to work? Will I need to cancel plans?

You’ve developed an elaborate ritual just to get out of bed – roll to the side, push up with your arms, sit for a minute, slowly stand while holding the nightstand.

By the time you’ve shuffled to the bathroom and taken your first pills, 45 minutes have passed.

This isn’t normal aging, and it’s not “just stiffness that works itself out.”

This is the inflammation triad creating a pain-stiffness cycle: while you sleep, your dysregulated nervous system never fully relaxes, so inflammation accumulates in your tissues overnight.

Your sensitized nervous system interprets that morning inflammation as extreme threat, creating protective muscle guarding that makes you stiff and painful.

You live on edge, hyperaware of every movement because you never know what will trigger The Flare-Up.

Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason at all.

When it hits, you’re bedridden for days, maybe weeks, unable to function while the pain consumes everything.

This unpredictability is terrorizing you, keeping you in constant fear.

Here’s what’s really happening: your nervous system is so dysregulated that normal movements or even thoughts about movement can trigger massive protective responses.

Spinal fusion. Discectomy. Laminectomy. These surgeries sound impressive and necessary, but here’s what informed consent should include: only 50-70% of back surgeries result in improvement,
20-40% have the SAME pain after surgery
10-20% develop worse pain than before
failed back surgery syndrome is a recognized medical condition affecting thousands.

Why? Because they’re operating on structure (your spine) while ignoring function (your nervous system).
