There’s been an important update to New Jersey’s requirements for certain medications!

The initial visit must still be completed in person. However, patients are no longer required to have an in-person visit every three months.

After the initial in person visit, telemedicine may be an option for follow up visits, as long as the patient is physically located in New Jersey at the time of the telemedicine visit.

As always, medication and follow up requirements can vary by patient. If you have questions about what this means for your child’s care, please reach out to our office.

🩸 Iron & Your Teen: Why This Nutrient Matters

Did you know that during puberty, your teen’s body increases its production of red blood cells to keep up with their growing need for oxygen? This is one reason why getting enough iron is especially important during the teenage years.

Iron plays an important role in your teen’s brain, muscles and immune system. It helps support healthy red blood cells, fuels active muscles and supports brain function during a time of rapid growth and development.

💡Pro tip: Pair plant-based sources of iron with foods high in vitamin C to help your body absorb more iron. Try adding bell peppers, citrus fruits, berries or tropical fruits to meals containing plant-based iron.

What happens if a teen doesn’t get enough iron?

Busy schedules, picky eating and restrictive diets can sometimes make it difficult for teens to get enough iron. Consistently low iron intake can lead to iron deficiency, which means the body doesn’t have enough iron to maintain healthy red blood cells and oxygen levels.

Possible signs include:

🔸Feeling tired, dizzy or weak
🔸Shortness of breath
🔸Difficulty thinking or concentrating
🔸Pale or unusual-looking skin
🔸Irritability
🔸Restless legs that interfere with sleep
🔸Cold hands or feet
🔸Frequent headaches
🔸Brain fog affective activities
🔸Craving non-food items such as ice, clay, dirt or starch (known as pica)

Who may be at higher risk?

Some teens are more likely to develop iron deficiency, including those who:

🔸Follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, particularly if they eat few iron-rich foods
🔸Have restrictive diets or eating disorders
🔸Have monthly periods, especially heavy or frequent periods
🔸Have certain conditions that affect red blood cells, such as sickle-cell disease
🔸Have ongoing blood loss from gastrointestinal conditions or other bleeding disorders

❤️ Bottom line: Iron is an important part of a healthy diet during the teen years. If you’re concerned that your teen may not be getting enough iron or if they are experiencing symptoms of iron deficiency, please reach out to us.
