Last but definitely not least, meet Valerie — one of our amazing Speech-Language Pathologists!

Valerie graduated from California State University - Northridge and brings so much heart, knowledge, and creativity to the children and families she serves every day.

✨ Favorite part of the job:
“One of the best parts of being an SLP is seeing growth and progress in my clients. Watching them gain confidence, develop new skills, and achieve goals they once struggled with makes me incredibly proud. I also enjoy building relationships with the children we serve and their families.”

🫧 Favorite therapy toys:
“My favorite therapy toys are the ones that make learning feel natural and fun while encouraging communication. Bubbles, pretend toys, and board games are great because they motivate children to request, comment, take turns, and engage with others while building language skills.”

💡 What Valerie wants people to know:

“Play is so important and purposeful. What may look like ‘just playing’ is often targeted work on language, attention, social skills, problem-solving, and communication. Progress looks different for every child. Communication is the goal. A child can communicate through words, gestures, signs, AAC, pictures, or devices. All forms of communication matter.”

✨ What’s the most rewarding part of working in speech therapy?

Watching a child’s confidence grow! It doesn’t matter what the skill is, nothing is better than watching them realize they can do it.

🧩 What are your favorite therapy tools or activities?

I have a lot of favorites, depending on what we are working on. For reading and language building, my favorite tools are structured, hands-on literacy materials like phonics manipulatives and sound cards. But when I just want to keep it fun and interactive, you can’t go wrong with Pop-Up Pirate or Ned's Head to get kids talking and laughing.

💡 What’s something you wish more people understood about speech therapy?

Speech therapy isn't just about how we talk—it’s about how we understand the world and express ourselves. From speech sounds and spoken language to the mechanics of reading and overcoming dyslexia, it covers the whole spectrum of communication and learning

Let’s celebrate Better Speech, Language, and Hearing Month by spotlighting our amazing speech team — starting with our wonderful SLPA, Paulina! 💚

Paulina graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso and brings so much compassion, creativity, and fun to every session.

✨ What’s your favorite part of being an SLPA?
“My favorite part of my job is building relationships with children and their families while helping kids grow in their communication skills and confidence.”

🧸 Favorite therapy tools and toys?
“I have so many favorites, but I love anything that keeps kids engaged while making communication fun and meaningful — especially bubbles, pretend play toys, sensory toys, and games.”

💬 What do you want people to know about speech therapy?
“Speech therapy is about so much more than talking — it helps children communicate, connect with others, build confidence, and succeed in everyday life. Every child learns differently, and therapy should always be supportive, fun, and individualized to their needs.”

We are swinging into May with our new swing stand and 100 new swings (therapy equipment haul video soon???). Also maybe Mr. Justin is the new favorite for putting it together 🤔

Suspended equipment is such a fun and effective way to provide vestibular input (important for regulation and supporting coordination of movements against gravity) while also challenging core strength and balance. All of our new swings offer limitless ways to address skills for functional and important outcomes! The added bonus is that they are incredibly fun and offer a dynamic challenge that motivates our friends to learn and grow.
