The ADA is opposed to insurance companies imposing fees for paper check payments.

It's important to note that the $15 weekly paper check fee mentioned in the post, does not applies to Delta Dental of Iowa. Delta Dental of Iowa confirmed this with the IDA, and they do not plan to implement a similar paper check fee.

The American Dental Association is voicing strong opposition to recent actions by Delta Dental of California to charge a weekly $15 fee as a “separate administrative charge” to dentists who want to be paid by paper checks to reimburse claims.

In a July 8 letter to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, the ADA asked the organization to take a stand against this payment policy shift and urged insurance commissioners around the country to support regulatory oversight. Read ADA News coverage at ADA.org/PaperChecks

The IDA is proud to recognize Dr. Mike Stufflebeam as the recipient of the 2026 Special Recognition Award, for his exceptional service, leadership, and dedication to the Association.

A board-certified pediatric dentist in Marshalltown, Dr. Stufflebeam has devoted his career to organized dentistry and advocacy, serving in numerous leadership roles with the IDA and the Waterloo District Dental Society, while mentoring colleagues across the profession.
