Today is World Lung Cancer Day. 🎗️

As Iowa continues to experience one of the nation's highest cancer incidence rates, conversations about lung cancer prevention and early detection are more important than ever. Thank you to Iowa's physicians for putting patients first every day.

By discussing risk factors, including smoking, radon exposure, secondhand smoke, and air pollution, and helping eligible patients determine whether lung cancer screening is appropriate, you can help save lives through early detection.

This week, we're recognizing Kevin Cunningham, MD, Chair of the IMS Committee on Legislation.

Alongside physician volunteers representing a wide range of specialties and communities across Iowa, Dr. Cunningham helps shape the Iowa Medical Society's advocacy efforts by developing recommendations for the IMS legislative agenda and providing strategic guidance on emerging policy issues. Together, their work helps drive physician-led advocacy at the Capitol, advancing policies that strengthen the practice of medicine and improve the health of Iowans.

Important conversations are happening at the Capitol.

This week, the IMS advocacy team traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet directly with Iowa's congressional delegation.

Top priorities included Medicare payment reform, J-1 visa waivers, and prior authorization reform.

We're excited to announce the formation of the Iowa Medicine Editorial Advisory Council and welcome Gregory R. Johnson, MD, SFHM, FAAFP, FACP, chief medical officer for UnityPoint Health, as its inaugural chair.

In this physician leadership role, Dr. Johnson will partner with Executive Editor Josie Sylte to help guide the strategic direction, themes, and relevance of Iowa Medicine, the quarterly magazine of the Iowa Medical Society. Together with the Council, he'll help ensure the publication reflects the evolving priorities, challenges, and opportunities facing physicians and future physicians across Iowa.

We look forward to the insight and expertise this Council will bring as we continue strengthening Iowa Medicine as a trusted voice for the profession.
