The Safe Center of Iowa is sharing these research opportunities from our partners. These studies are focused on better understanding the experiences of survivors and improving resources and care for those impacted by sexual violence.

Nothing happens that you do not choose. That includes every part of a visit, so here is what one looks like.

You arrive. Front desk staff welcome you. An advocate meets you under Iowa Code 915 and stays as long as you want. A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, or SANE, explains each option: medical care, STI prevention medication, evidence collection. You pick what happens and what does not. You can say yes to some parts and no to others, and you can stop at any point, including after you start.

A nurse can collect evidence without you deciding anything about reporting. You can decide later. You can decide never.

Nobody will ask why you waited. When you want to see your options, the Get Help page on our website walks through them.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners offer dedicated medical care without judgment. Care is never based on legal definitions or charge levels. You do not have to prove anything here. Nothing happens that you do not choose, and an advocate is present automatically under Iowa Code 915 to protect your privacy. Our center welcomes people of every age, race, and gender. 🎉 EXCITING NEWS FOR SANE EDUCATION! 🎉

The SAFE Center of Iowa’s Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Examiner Online Course is now listed by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) on its national Forensic Nurses resource page among the educational activities approved for ANCC contact hours!

We are committed to advancing accessible, high-quality SANE education that builds knowledgeable, confident forensic nurses, strengthens multidisciplinary response, and ultimately improves skilled, compassionate, trauma-informed care for survivors — in Iowa and beyond.

We are incredibly proud to continue contributing to the education and development of the next generation of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners. 💙

Iowa's first stand-alone center is taking shape in Des Moines. Our current build phase establishes a co-located facility where medical care, advocacy, counseling, and law enforcement collaborate under one roof. Tax-deductible contributions support this permanent statewide model. SAFE Center of Iowa is a registered 501(c)(3) organization, EIN 93-4366817, located at 3200 Grand Avenue, Suite 400, Des Moines.
