Walking. It's something i love to do daily, often even if it's raining a bit, snowing, windy, you name it. Arc and I get to move, be outside, and keep ourselves in balance. There was a time I didn't enjoy it. It hurt. My neck. My knee. My shoulder at times. Somatics has helped me find balance, so that I can walk with my pelvis and upper torso moving opposite of each other, not use my legs and arms so much, and breathe better. Walking not feeling good for you? Try a few private sessions to good better balance in your posture and move your torso better. Or noon me this Saturday at The Haven Indianola for my walking workshop! Look forward to walking with you!

I'm so excited for my good friend, Lisa Malsom , as she opens her Physical Therapy practice! Check back later this year as she opens. She's one of my favorites humans, and excels at so many things that make her a great PT!

🌿 Something new is beginning…
After more than 26 years as a physical therapist, I’ve learned that sometimes there isn’t one specific injury to “fix.”
Sometimes you just know your body feels different.
Maybe you don’t feel as strong as you used to. You’re carrying more tension. Your balance or mobility has changed. Exercise feels different. Stress seems to show up physically. Or maybe you simply want to feel stronger, healthier, and more confident in your body as you move through different seasons of life.
That’s the idea behind Zenvarya Integrative Physical Therapy.
I’m creating a quiet, private practice where I can take the time to look at the whole picture—not just where something hurts.
Care may include strength and balance, movement and mobility, breathing, nervous system regulation, hands-on and myofascial techniques, and helping you feel more comfortable and confident moving your body again.
Most importantly, Zenvarya will be one-on-one, individualized care with time to listen, assess, and figure out what your body actually responds to.
Zenvarya is still coming together, and I’m excited to share the journey as I get closer to opening. 🌿

"I didn't know changing how I was breathing could make such a difference. Not only am I calmer throughout the day, I'm able to get more done, my blood pressure is lower, and I don't have tension in my neck and shoulders!" After 2 sessions, this client was able to switch her breathing (by working on it regularly in small amounts of time throughout the day) from short shallow breaths with her chest and nose doing most of the work, to slower longer breaths, with the main work coming from her diaphragm. She also learned 2 somatic movements to release muscles in her upper back, chest, and shoulders. The interesting comment she made at her first session after changing her breathing, was, "Wow, the tension in my neck and shoulders is gone." When she came in, she stated she didn't have pain or tension. She was so used to it that she wasn't even conscious of it, until it was gone.

"I'm feeling good! My hip doesn't hurt anymore, I worked all day without noticing any pain, and I've had a bowel movement every day!" This was a great start to a visit last week! This is what drives me to do what I do. This client had hip pain for years. She had constipation and pain in her abdomen. She was anxious most of the time. After doing some Somatic Yoga sessions, she learned to pay attention to how she was breathing and change it throughout her day. She learned somatic movements to release back muscles that had been overworking all the time. With those two practices, she also started getting contraction and relaxation of the muscles around her intestines which helped the intestines work better, actually work properly. And then some somatic movements to find better balance in her pelvis muscles so that she wasn't overworking one side and putting too much pressure on the hip joint.

If you have questions about whether Somatic Yoga would benefit you, please reach out! [email protected]. When other things haven't quite got you where you want to be, this work often can!

Fluid Stability, final post (at least for now.) Our bodies are meant to move. In today's world, most of us sit or stand for long periods of time. When we move, it's exercise and often pretty strenuous. What we don't do a lot of is what I think of as moderate movement. I'm old enough to remember when we had to get up to answer the phone, to change the TV channel, and to have to make our own food. I remember getting the first TV remote, the first TV dinners (that went in the oven), and my first cell phone. I also remember most people in our neighborhood gardening, walking places, and preparing meals by cutting and chopping. While our devices sure make things easier, it also keeps us from moving much. We are literally training ourselves not to move. The good news is that we CAN RETRAIN OURSELVES to move more, and to move better!

Now that we're at the end of this series on Fluid Stability, think about what you want to enjoy most in your life. Are you fully enjoying it? What's holding you back? You CAN CHANGE the way you move. It's not by doing really hard work-outs, at least at first if that's what you want to do. It starts with paying attention. What is your posture like, meaning how do you hold yourself in space? How do you breathe? Once I know those things, what can I do to change it? It's truly my pleasure to help people find better balance and Fluid Stability.

How you hold yourself and whether you move or not will affect you, one way or the other. Make it a positive effect!

Fluid Stability, part 3. Two people go to the Fair for the day. One stands in one position all day, going further and further into that pattern. The second has done the work of Somatics and Breath Re-education, has done work to decrease the chronic tension patterns in their body, and pays attention throughout the day, to make sure they move their torso, and almost continually shifts how they're standing. Person 1 reaches for something the next day and ends up in back spasms. Person 2 feels good the next day and enjoys their day. The difference: Fluid Stability, and learning the work of Somatics and making their body their priority by paying attention to how they're standing, sitting, moving and breathing throughout the day. Just like we pay attention to how much we eat, how much we drink, if we need to brush our teeth, take showers, etc., we can pay attention to HOW WE MOVE. It takes some learning and persistance at first, and then it becomes second nature, automatic.

Check in with how you stand, are you moving your core throughout the day? Do you feel tight/stiff as the day goes on? Then notice - are you locked in at your core muscles, or are they able to move? You CAN CHANGE this.
How you hold yourself and whether you move or not will affect you, one way or the other. Make it a positive effect!

Fluid Stability, part 2. Do you have those places in your body, maybe between your shoulder blades, your neck, your low back, one of your hips or shoulders? Reflexive patterns can cause some of our core muscles to overwork. All. The. Time. Even when you sleep. If they're always "on" and overworking, you're NOT going to be able to move through the full range or motion, and you aren't going to be able to find good connection/strength in some parts of your body, usually the opposite places.

Ever been told you need to strengthen your "core" when you have back issues? Well, that's not wronge, but ir'a not the whole picture! If you don't learn to release the back muscles BEFORE you try to strengthen the front core, you're never going to change them. One of the things I talk about a lot in my sessions is that we want our core muscles (by the way, that's all the way around the torso, not just the abs) to work like a hand-off. This means one muscle relaxes and lengthens while the opposite side contracts. If we don't release the side that's stuck and overworking and try to contract the opposite side, it results in a tug of war instead. That might relieve the pressure for a while, but it isn't fixing the issue! Somatics teaches us how to do that!

Check in with your posture - are there muscles that are overworking/tight? Check in with how you breathe - are you holding your breath? You CAN CHANGE all of this by learning first how to turn off, disengage, or release/lengthen tight muscles.

How you hold yourself and whether you move or not will affect you, one way or the other. Make it a positive effect!

Fluid Stability. I talk about this A LOT! We've been taught to want to have core stability and pelvic floor stability, and what has happened is that it's caused a lot of people to get "stuck." So many of my clients feel stuck, and at the same time, are doing what they've been told, which is to pull something/muscles in or up, causing them to feel more stuck! Our bodies are meants to move. Let me say that louder - OUR BODIES ARE MEANT TO MOVE! What we're after is being more NEUTRAL in our posture. Once we achieve that, we want to move our bodies in all directions, from the core - fluid stability - the ability to shift and change to adapt to whatever direction we want to move, and to take any load that is needed. I compare this to how we build houses, even skyscrapers. Some movement has to be built in, or the building can't withstand the forces of nature. We need to reframe this for our bodies!

Check in with your posture - are there muscles that are overworking/tight? Check in with how you breathe - are you holding your breath? Then notice - are you locked in at your core muscles, or are they able to move? You CAN CHANGE all of this. How you hold yourself and whether you move or not will affect you, one way or the other.

Make it a positive effect!
