Lakeshore Affirmative Therapy is a neurodiversity affirming occupational therapy practice supporting neurodivergent individuals of all ages, and we currently have new openings for OT services (including evening and weekends)!

We help clients navigate daily activities such as work, school, self care, routines, meal preparation, household tasks, and community participation by addressing factors like sensory processing, executive functioning, nervous system regulation, and burnout that can impact participation in daily life.

Services are available virtually and in-home, and all prospective clients begin with a consultation call so we can better understand goals, support needs, scheduling, and therapeutic fit before connecting them with the most appropriate OT on our team.

Our first in-person workshop, When Toothbrushing Feels Hard, is in the books!

Thank you to the participants that came to our toothbrushing workshop and made it such a meaningful experience.

Hearing everyone’s shared experiences and feeling the sense of community and understanding in the room with no judgment filled my OT heart.

I’m so grateful to be able to hold spaces like this and connect with all of you in person. Already looking forward to doing more of these soon!

Working on Executive Functioning skills doesn't have to be complicated or boring!

The best way to address this area is through intrinsically motivating activities, such as play 🤸🎨♟

I've highlighted a 3 step process that was used during an OT session to promote a client's ability to plan and complete multi-step activities.

1. Make a Plan: This can be a planned discussed out loud, drawn in a picture, and written down in steps. In this case, the plan was drawn as a picture.

2. Follow the Plan: Do the activity! It's okay if the activity doesn't go as planned, you can reflect on it in the final step

3. Reflect: After completing the plan, this is a good opportunity to reflect on how the planned worked. Were any changes made to the plan? Did any obstacles pop up during the plan? Did it take longer or shorter than expected?

Being able to regulate your energy level means more than staying in a calm state 🧘‍♂️

Energy Regulation should look like ⬆️up-regulating and ⬇️down-regulating your energy level throughout the day in order to better match the activity at hand.

In order to self regulate our energy levels we need to
⚡️ Know where our energy level is currently at (👋 interoception)
⚡️ Determine what energy level would be best for the activity
⚡️ Take steps to match the energy required for the activity by maintaining, up-regulating, or down-regulating our energy level

Big stress responses rarely come out of nowhere💥💣

We just need to know what to look for 🔍

Here are 10 signs you may observe in your child when they are experiencing nervous system dysregulation.

1. Seeking Out More Control
2. Change in Voice or Language
3. Increased Demands
4. Decreased Attention
5. Increase in “No’s” / Refusals
6. Moving More
7. Being Extra Silly
8. Negotiating
9. Spacing Out
10. Looking Flushed or Sweaty

By recognizing these signs we can better help a child stay regulated and help avoid big fight, flight, freeze, or fawn stress responses. ✨
