In Loving Memory of Konstantina ‘Dena’ Mannos

A Life of Grace and Devotion

Dena passed away peacefully in her home at the remarkable age of 102, leaving behind a legacy of devotion to her family, her faith and her community. Born and raised in Indianapolis, she was a woman of extraordinary strength, wisdom and compassion. After losing her father at the age of eight, she grew up with a deep sense of responsibility and resilience. While studying at Butler University, she made the selfless decision to leave college and work in a wartime conversion factory, proudly supporting the war effort while helping provide for her family at home.

Marriage, Family and Faith

As the war came to an end, Dena’s brother introduced her to a close Army friend, Nick. The two fell in love and married in February 1947, beginning a beautiful life partnership. Together they raised a family of four children: Tim, Denise, Pete and Suzanne. Dena’s work ethic and commitment were tireless. With her soft smile and way of few words, she earned the respect of administrators, staff and students during more than 35 years of dedicated service to the local school district. She and Nick, along with four other parish families were instrumental in organizing and founding the Saints Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Glenview. Beginning in 1958, these families petitioned for and received their charter from the archdiocese in 1960. Over the next four years they organized events and fundraisers while services were held in a local elementary school, until the first liturgy was celebrated in the new church in 1964. Dena also served for many years as president and member of the church’s philanthropic Philoptochos Society.

Family at the Center

Above all else, Dena lived for her family. Whether she was masterfully sewing clothing, preparing delicious meals, or keeping a warm and welcoming home after a full day at work, she poured her whole heart into everything she did. She was the family’s anchor and cheerleader, enthusiastically supporting every game, performance, graduation, and milestone in the lives of her children and grandchildren. A gifted seamstress, Dena lovingly made her daughters’ bridesmaid dresses, wedding favors, stage costumes, and Halloween costumes. Many of these treasured pieces continue to be used today as dress-up clothes by her great-grandchildren

Adventure, Resilience and Joy

Dena’s passion for travel & education took her beyond the continental United States, and her greatest joy was bringing her family along for the journey. Across three generations, those shared adventures became cherished memories. After years of cheering family runners from the sidelines, Dena participated in three Nashville 5K marathon events. Undeterred by blindness, and already in her 90s, she inspired crowds as she strode toward the finish line. During her third appearance, at age 95, she was interviewed mid-race and asked, “What is your secret?” Her answer was simple and unforgettable: “Smile and keep moving.”

An Enduring Legacy

Dena’s boundless energy, loyalty, and warmth touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her family remains forever inspired by her strength, creativity & perseverance and is wrapped in the enduring love she shared so generously.

Dena is survived by her sister; her four children and their spouses; eight grandchildren; four grandchildren-in-law; and fourteen great grandchildren. She is affectionally remembered, and may she now find comfort with those who have passed before her, especially her loving husband, Nick.

In Loving Memory of Peter J. Best

Peter J. Best, age 97, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2026. A man who truly embodied being "97 years young," Peter lived a long, vibrant life full of faith, intellect, witty humor, and a spirit that never grew old.

Born to John and Efthimia Best, "Effie", proud immigrants from Sparta, Greece, Peter carried his Greek heritage in his soul. He was a true Spartan—resilient, principled, and deeply committed to his roots and traditions. Peter was an avid runner, a lover of jazz, big bands, and show tunes, and he frequently fancied himself a singer and a writer. An insatiable reader with a deep passion for history, Peter often quoted Greek philosophers, scholarly minds, and the great leaders of our country. His respectful, kind, and genuinely curious disposition, as well as his aptitude for storytelling that stretched back to his childhood, made him light up every room he walked into. He lived by the enduring philosophy that "choosing friends is one of the most important decisions you make in life."

Peter proudly worked as an attorney, dedicating his sharp mind to the legal profession. His leadership left a lasting mark on his community, serving with distinction as the former President of the Hellenic Bar Association, as well as the Parish Council President and Member at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Chicago formerly United Greek Orthodox Churches of Chicago.

Peter lovingly served his country in the United States Army and was certified in the Counter Intelligence Corps.

Though his beloved wife, Mary (Mitchell) Best, passed away much too young, her memory guided him every single day. Peter raised their children exactly as they would have together, honoring her love in everything he did.

Peter is survived by his devoted children: his son, John Best and his wife Maria; and his daughter, Ellen Best and her husband Greg Zrazik. His legacy shines brightly through his cherished grandsons, Peter John Best and Christopher Cole Zrazik, who brought him immense joy and pride. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Stathea Flevaris and her husband Nicholas, and his sister-in-law, Georgia Mitchell. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his surviving nieces and nephews: Christine, Jim, Pete, Lisa, Peter, Constantine, Nicole, Marta, Alexis, Jennifer, and Stephanie, alongside a community of lifelong, very dear friends.

He is reunited in eternity with his wife, Mary; his parents, John and Effie; his brother, George and Joanne Best, and Dr. Nicholas Mitchell, and Peter and Jackie Mitchell. He was also preceded in death by his dear nephews, John, George, Craig, and Scott.

May his memory be eternal.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1017 N. LaSalle Blvd., Chicago, IL. from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 2905 Thatcher Ave., River Grove, IL.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter's name to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1017 N. LaSalle Blvd., Chicago, IL. 60610, or the Greek American Rehabilitation and Care Center, 220 1st St., Wheeling, IL. 60090.

10/12/2026

Peter Z. Margetis, 89, of Glenview, passed away peacefully on October 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on August 16, 1937, in the village of Lalla in Karystos, Euboea, Greece, to Zacharias and Irene Margetis, both of whom preceded him in death. He had three older siblings, Demitrios, Evangelia, and Kosta who also preceded him in death.

Peter's early life was shaped by the sea. As a young man he traveled the world as a merchant marine, navigating distant ports and foreign shores with the courage and independence that would define his character throughout his life. It was on one of those journeys that he met the love of his life, Chrysanthie, née Voudouris. He set anchor, built a life, and never looked back.

He was the beloved husband of Chrysanthie Margetis, who preceded him in death, and whose memory he carried with him every day of his life. He was the proud father of Renee (Gregory, deceased) Post and Alesia (Steven) Papastathis, and the devoted grandfather of Peter, Theodore, and Peter. His was a life measured not in miles sailed but in love given.

Peter was a man of deep faith and proud heritage. A devoted member of the Greek Orthodox Church, he lived his beliefs with quiet constancy. He was a proud member of the Order of AHEPA, where he served with distinction as a Past District Governor of District 13, and a proud member of the Pan Euboean Society, honoring the island of Euboea where his story began.

To know Peter was to know a man who carried himself with dignity. He worked hard, paid his way, and asked for nothing he had not earned. He knew every country he had ever visited, every port he had ever docked in, and he would tell you about them — eyes bright, voice sure — until his final chapter. He loved Greek music, good food, and the company of his family and friends. He defended what was his with humor and grace. He was, as those who cared for him in his final months came to know, genuinely kind.

In his last days, Peter made his peace. He said he had lived a good life, seen the world, and that it was his time. He was right on all counts. He passed with the sacraments of his faith, his family beside him, and the knowledge that his daughter and son-in-law had traveled to Lalla — to the village where he was born — and had brought him home.

Peter is survived by his daughters Renee Post and Alesia (Steven) Papastathis; his grandchildren Peter, Theodore, and Peter; and by many beloved nieces and nephews.

May his memory be eternal.

Visitation will be held on Thursday October 15, 2026, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ryan-Parke Funeral Home, 120 South Northwest Highway, Park Ridge, IL. Interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 2905 Thatcher Rd., River Grove, IL.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 1017 N. LaSalle Blvd., Chicago, IL. 60610, or Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601.

10/11/2026

Mattina M. Malas, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of those who meant the most to her.

Mattina was a woman with an extraordinary love for life and an even greater love for the people in it. She found happiness in life’s simplest pleasures: a room filled with family, the laughter of loved ones, a good conversation, and the joy of simply being together. Her smile was warm, her laughter contagious, and her gratitude for life unwavering. She had a beautiful way of living in the moment, appreciating what she had rather than longing for what she didn’t.

As a mother, Mattina gave everything she could to her children. And just when it seemed she couldn’t possibly have more love to give, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, and somehow, she found even more. Her love was abundant, unconditional, and freely given. Her family was her greatest treasure, and nothing brought her more happiness than being surrounded by the generations of love she helped create.

Mattina is survived by her daughters, Renee Stevens (Otto Wolf) and Christine Alesia; her granddaughters, Ashley Miller (Noah Miller), Amber Gonzalez (Angel Gonzalez), Ingrid Payne (John Payne), and Emily Wolf (Eddie Gurevich); and her cherished great-grandchildren, Simon Gonzalez, Davina Gonzalez, Otto Payne, Wolf Payne, and Sonny Gurevich. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives were made brighter by knowing her.

In her final chapter, Mattina remained surrounded by the very thing she treasured most throughout her life: love. She left this world with a heart full of gratitude, especially for her beloved nephew and angel, Dean Assimos. His unwavering love, kindness, and devotion held a special place in her heart. His presence was a blessing she cherished deeply, and she departed this life especially grateful for the love he so generously gave. Her family will forever hold that love and devotion close to their hearts.

Mattina’s legacy will not be measured simply by the years she lived, but by the love she gave, the laughter she shared, and the countless moments she made beautiful just by being there.

She lived with gratitude, loved without limits, and found joy in the gift of each day.

And while her presence will be deeply missed, the love she leaves behind will live on for generations.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2026 from 9 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church, 5649 N. Sheridan Rd., Chicago, IL. Interment immediately following at Elmwood Cemetery, 2905 Thatcher Ave., River Grove, IL. 10/05/2026

June M. Terpinas passed away on October 3, 2026. Beloved wife of Daniel Terpinas and loving mother of Johnny (Kristyn) Terpinas. Cherished yiayia of Lily and Daniel. She was the devoted daughter of the late Reginald and Bernice Griffith. She was the dear sister of Peggy (and the late Harry) Nolan, and Kathy (Tom) Hyland.

June was born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, where she met the love of her life, Daniel. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage, raising their son Johnny.

June was a devoted wife, loving mother to John, loving mother-in-law to Kristyn, cherished yiayia to Lily and Daniel, beloved aunt, and dear sister whose life was defined by her love for her family, her dedication to public service, and a personality that was uniquely and unmistakably her own.

For almost 66 years, June shared a deep and loving marriage with Danny, the person she loved most in this world. Their life together was built on love, loyalty, friendship, and a lifetime of memories. Their marriage was one of the greatest joys and most important parts of her life.

June also lived an extraordinary professional life. She spent more than 25 years with the United States Secret Service, serving her country with dedication, professionalism, and integrity. She later continued her career in the United States Federal Court System, building a remarkable record of public service. Her career was a source of great pride and reflected her determination, independence, and strong sense of responsibility.

June had a personality that people never forgot. She loved to argue politics and was always ready for a spirited debate. She had strong opinions and was never afraid to share them. Those who knew her well knew that a political discussion with her was rarely going to end quietly, and that was part of what made her so much fun. Just ask Johnny.

Her sports loyalties were just as strong. She loved the Bears and hated the Packers. She loved the Sox and hated the Cubs. She was passionate about the things she cared about, and she brought that same enthusiasm and spirit to life. June loved all animals and had a tenderness and compassion for them that was simply part of who she was. A stray cat or two ended up as the new family pet. She also loved going to the casino with Danny to lose “all their money.”

But above everything else, June loved Danny. Their bond was at the center of her life. Their story was one of enduring love and companionship, a love that remained constant throughout the decades and will continue through the memories they shared.

June leaves behind a remarkable legacy: a lifetime of service to her country, a career of accomplishment, a family who adored her, and a marriage filled with love, devotion, and countless memories.

June will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but especially by Danny, John, Kristyn, Lily and Daniel, and the rest of the family she loved so dearly.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 12, 2026, at St. Nectarios Greek Orthodox Church, 133 S Roselle Rd, Palatine, IL, from 9 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be private.

09/21/2026

Anastasia Gevrekis (née Toulios) fell asleep in the Lord on September 18, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Chrystallopigi, Florina, Greece, and raised in Kastoria. Anastasia was the beloved daughter of the late Fr. Kostantinos and Presbytera Athena (Korovesi) Toulios. She was the loving wife of the late Athanasios Gevrekis; adored mother of Anna (Richard) Duros, Bobby (Teresa) Gevrekis, and Eddie Iraklis Gevrekis; proud yiayia of Emily Gevrekis, Samantha (Clayton) Larson, Jaime (Michael) Phelan, Andrew Duros, Anastasia Gevrekis, and Anthony Gevrekis; and cherished proto-yiayia of Anna Eberhardt, Athan Eberhardt, and Weston Dean Larson.

She was the fond sister of Evrithiki (the late Kosta) Maleganos and the late Gregory (the late Eleni) Toulios, and a beloved thea to many nieces and nephews in Greece.

Raised in a family defined by generations of faith, Anastasia's great-grandfather, grandfather, father, and uncles all served their communities as Orthodox priests. She met her future husband, Athanasios, in Florina, where they married and began their family. In 1970, they emigrated to Chicago to begin a new chapter.

Faith and community remained the focus of their lives in America. They were dedicated members of St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church for over 25 years before later attending St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church near their home.

Anastasia had a lifelong love for children, which shone brightly every day during her career with the Chicago Public Schools. Following the passing of her beloved Athanasios in 2000, she remained an active, devoted yiayia in the lives of her grandchildren.

As the matriarch of her family, Anastasia passed down cherished Greek traditions along with her famous koulourakia recipe.

Affectionately called Yiayia “Maki”—short for filaki, honoring the endless kisses she gave—she expressed her love through her cooking and knitting. Nothing brought her greater joy than preparing a loved one's favorite meal. An accomplished knitter, she made blankets, sweaters, and booties for family, friends, and neighbors alike. When arthritis began to affect her hands, she planned ahead, and knit entire bins of baby items for future great grandchildren. To date, three great-grandchildren have received these handmade gifts of love from Yiayia Maki.

Anastasia was also an exceptionally talented gardener whose extensive flower and vegetable gardens earned a local beautification award. She continued to plant and cultivate well into her late 80s, generously sharing cuttings with anyone who asked—ensuring her flowers, much like her memory, spread far and wide.

She was a loving woman of extraordinary strength and faith, and she will be deeply missed. May her memory be eternal.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Anastasia's name to Ascension of Our Lord Greek Orthodox Church, 1207 N. Riverwoods Rd, Lincolnshire, IL 60069 or St. Haralambos Greek Orthodox Church, 7373 N. Caldwell Ave., Niles, IL 60714 would be appreciated.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of funeral service 10:30 a.m., at Ascension of our Lord Greek Orthodox Church, 1207 N. Riverwoods Rd, Lincolnshire, IL. Interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery, 2905 Thatcher Ave., River Grove, IL.

Pat and Tasso hosted many family holidays and celebrations, and Pat was always on watch to make sure there was enough food on the table and that plates were refilled.

Throughout her life, Pat was kind, sweet, and always a caregiver. She spent many years caring for grandchildren while parents worked. Yiayia and grandchildren would play games, do homework, cook, garden, watch gameshows, and be loved.
