For those of you who do not know me and my professional background, here is some of my bio:

Dr. Michael Gontarek is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic (Port Orange, FL) where he obtained his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. He graduated from Addison Trail High School before pursuing a degree in Kinesiology/Pre-Med at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign as a Chick Evans Scholar where he graduated with honors. Dr. Gontarek's passion for nutrition and helping patients optimize their health led him to pursue a Master of Science degree in the field of Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine through the University of Western States (UWS) (Portland, OR) during the last year of his doctorate education. He became a published author in the peer-reviewed journal entitled Nutritional Perspectives where he published two review articles pertaining to the topics of prevention of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Sarcopenia following graduation from UWS. In addition to being a board certified chiropractor, Dr. Gontarek also holds board certification in clinical nutrition through the American Clinical Board of Nutrition. He is also a member of the American Chiropractic Association Counsel on Nutrition.

Dr. Gontarek is exceptionally passionate about educating, empowering, and assisting his patients in becoming advocates of their own health and wellbeing. His examination and treatment styles are rooted heavily in the McKenzie method® of mechanical diagnosis and therapy® (MDT) and physical movement therapy such as strength and pilates-based rehabilitation. For the patients and clients that seek nutrition guidance, Dr. Gontarek's evaluation & coaching style is rooted in evidence-based, fundamental patient education in hopes of helping the patient/client understand the "whys” and “how’s” associated with their care.

Headaches are a common ailment that many people suffer from on a regular basis. Although there are many different types of headaches, a common type is the cervicogenic tension headache, where the pain from the headache is caused by an issue with the neck or it’s associated tissues.

This study by Haas et al. shows the effectiveness of spinal manipulation (aka a chiropractic adjustment) in reducing the frequency of cervicogenic headaches in patients who suffer from chronic cervicogenic headaches. The more spinal manipulation a patient received, the greater the reduction in frequency of headaches.

Chiropractic care is a safe, conservative method of treatment for many different types of headaches. If you suffer from headaches or even neck pain, call your chiropractor today to make an appointment. He or she will be able to properly assess your condition and see if chiropractic care can be a helpful option for you.

Do you love your diet drinks? Many people do. Although diet sodas and other drinks may be a good substitute for weaning off sugar-loaded beverages, chronic consumption may lead to poor health outcomes.

New research published in Stroke shows a link between artificially sweetened beverages and increased risk for ischemic stroke, coronary heart disease, and all-cause mortality (overall death) in women.

The data used in this study was pulled from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study from 2002 which included almost 82,000 participants.

An interesting finding of this study was that heavy diet beverage consumption was associated with higher risk of stroke only in those women who were obese. HOWEVER, all-cause mortality (again, overall death) was INCREASED among frequent diet beverage consumers who were of normal weight or overweight but not yet obese.

So, should you never ever EVER have a diet soda again? No. That’s extreme, and few “all or nothing” stands are actually sustainable for the long term...That being said, consuming diet drinks each and every day just because they’re “diet” does not make for a healthy strategy in everyday life.

“We should emphasize water as the healthiest substitute for sugar sweetened beverages...consumption of these beverages should be viewed as a time-limited intermediate in the transition to water and other healthier beverages.” @ Chicago, Illinois
