Today feels heavy, even 25 years later...
On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was sitting at home breastfeeding my five-week-old baby when one of our workers came to the door and told us that New York was under attack and that we needed to turn on the news.
So we did.
And like millions of people across the country, we sat there in complete disbelief, between waves of terror, shock and sadness, watching the events unfold.
I remember holding my tiny baby, knowing she would never understand what happened and how her life might be forever altered. I was deep in the trenches of postpartum, struggling with breastfeeding and life in general, and sitting there watching the towers burn and asking over and over, “What is happening?” "this can't be real!" Hoping this was all a bad dream.
And then we watched them fall.... I was literally screaming at the tv, tears streaming down my face, as we watched people running for their lives, as the rubble hit the ground, watching people out of windows, I guess knowing their fate.. and the Twin Towers being reduced to piles if rubble. This is something you never forget, if you experienced it.
I was left clinging to my then 7, 6, 3 and 5 week old, wondering what our life would be like moving forward.
There are moments in life that divide time into a before and an after. For so many of us, September 11th was one of those moments.
Even for those of us who didn't personally lose someone that day, we witnessed an unimaginable amount of fear, devastation, bravery, grief, and loss. We watched thousands of lives disappear in a matter of hours, and in some way, our world never felt quite the same afterward.
Twenty-five years later, I can still picture that morning. I can still remember the baby in my arms, the television in front of me, and the feeling of trying to comprehend something that felt impossible to comprehend.
Today I remember the lives that were lost, the families whose lives were forever changed, the first responders, police, and any human, who ran toward danger, and a day none of us who witnessed it will ever forget.
September 11, 2001. 💔
