Many MRSA skin infections start as a small red bump that may resemble a pimple, boil, or insect/spider bite. Over a short time, the area can become painful, warm, swollen, firm, or filled with pus. Sometimes it may develop a dark center or begin draining.
Do not squeeze, pop, or try to drain it at home. Keep the area clean and covered, wash your hands frequently, and avoid sharing towels, razors, clothing, or personal items.
Seek medical care promptly if the redness is spreading, pain or swelling is increasing, there is drainage, you develop fever, or the infection is near the eye, face, hand, or groin. Early evaluation can help determine whether drainage, antibiotics, or both are needed.
When in doubt, get it checked—what looks like a spider bite may be a treatable skin infection.

🚨 UPDATE: Health Advisory Issued for Cinco Bayou

On August 4, 2026, the Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County issued a health advisory for Cinco Bayou in Fort Walton Beach after testing confirmed elevated bacteria levels.

Officials are advising against swimming and all other water related activities in the affected area due to an increased risk of illness. Drinking water is not affected.

The advisory will remain in place until bacteria levels fall below the accepted health level. Anyone who comes into contact with the water should wash thoroughly, especially before eating or drinking.
