Congratulations, Dr. Moldovan! The National Institutes of Health has awarded Wayne State University researcher and postdoctoral fellow Genna Moldovan, Ph.D., a grant to advance her project, “Defining trained immunity in female ge***al tract neutrophils."

“This response can be thought of as immune memory and allows immune cells like neutrophils to respond rapidly and strongly to potential infections to protect against acquiring said infection,” she said. “We are investigating how this mechanism occurs and if it can be leveraged to prevent women from acquiring ge***al infections like HIV.”

The work is taking place in the lab of principal investigator Marta Rodriguez-Garcia, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, and the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development. This is great news for women's reproductive health!

The project is supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the NIH under Award Number F32AI203648.

Clinical Reproductive Immunology, edited by Karen Racicot, is the newest volume in the Reproductive Immunology series. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical research and diagnostic approaches used to identify immune-related etiologies of reproductive and pregnancy disorders. An excellent resource for clinicians, researchers, and trainees working at the intersection of immunology and reproductive health. First in its type. Congratulations to Karen Racicot, PhD

Mott Center researchers awarded $2.4 million NIH grant to study effects of E-cigarette exposure on offspring respiratory immunity

Congratulations to Jayanth Ramadoss, Ph.D., Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of the Pregnancy and Environment Division at the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development, and Marta Rodriguez-Garcia, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at Wayne State University School of Medicine, on their newly funded research project.

The team will investigate how e-cigarette exposure during pregnancy affects fetal lung immune development and newborn susceptibility to respiratory viral infections. Their research will focus on components found in newer-generation e-cigarette products and examine how these exposures may affect developing immune pathways — including viral sensing, interferon signaling and neutrophil responses — with potential differences between male and female offspring.

“The work of Drs. Ramadoss and Rodriguez-Garcia is an excellent example of the mission of the Mott Center,” said Gil Mor, M.D., Ph.D., scientific director of the center and vice chair for Research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “This project integrates environmental toxicology, pregnancy biology, fetal development, immunology and child health. It also addresses a critical clinical question: How exposures before birth may alter the health of the next generation. This is precisely the type of interdisciplinary and translational research that the Mott Center was designed to support.”

Delighted to share that the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development has been awarded a $7.2M grant from the National Institutes of Health to establish a new Specialized Center of Research Excellence on S*x Differences (SCORE Center, U54). The center — E-PATHS (Exposome & Pregnancy-Associated Triggers of Host Immunity and S*x-Dimorphic Outcomes) — will be housed at the C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development, exploring how many diseases may originate before birth through maternal, paternal, placental, fetal, microbial, and environmental signals.
