You clock out. You hang up the uniform. But something doesn't power down with it.

That constant scan, who's behind you, what's out of place, what could go wrong next, doesn't know the shift ended. It just keeps running, quietly, in rooms that don't need it: the grocery store, the dinner table, your own living room.

That's not something wrong with you. It's a nervous system that's been trained to stay switched on, doing exactly what it was trained to do, just in the wrong place now.

If it's been a while since it powered down, that's worth paying attention to.

Yesterday, FST5 had the honor of presenting at the MDOC Wellness/Peer Team Conference at the Green Oaks Training and Professional Development Center in Whitmore Lake.

Thank you to everyone who works to support the wellness of Michigan's corrections professionals and their families. It was a great day of connection with people who care about this work.

πŸ”ˆOne week from today, Michigan first responders.

πŸ”ΈπŸ”Έ Two free webinars, one morning - September 30.

This job asks a lot of you. September 30th is about giving something back.

πŸ”Έ9:00–10:00 AM ET | Understanding FST5 Resources for You & Your Family
A look at everything available to Michigan's frontline professionals and their families β€” the 24/7 support line, peer support, training, and clinical care connections. Come for yourself, or come to learn how to point your team toward help.

πŸ”Έ10:30 AM–12:00 PM ET | Mandated Reporting: Protecting Others, Supporting Responders

Join Dr. Rebecca Klisz-Hubert and Dr. Tehmina Shakir to learn how to recognize signs of child abuse, neglect, and human trafficking in the field, how to report a concern without investigating it yourself, and how to take care of yourself when a call stays with you.

Both sessions are free and virtual.
CE credits available for both (EMS & 911 Telecommunications).

⏳ Seats are filling - register for either or both, links in comments.

Recovery isn't one moment. It's a lot of small ones.

Decompressing" looks different for everyone. For a lot of first responders, it starts as a couple drinks to shut the day off, and quietly turns into needing them to.

September is National Recovery Month, and we want to say the quiet part out loud: using something to get through the job doesn't make you weak. It makes you human, and it's a lot more common in this profession than most people admit. What matters is that you don't have to figure it out alone, and you don't have to have it all together before you reach out.

Confidential treatment is available for you and your family. Our Wayne Health partnership means no out-of-pocket cost. Prefer your own provider? Choose from FST5-vetted clinicians statewide (cost may vary).

This week, FST5 is on the ground across Michigan.

πŸ”Έ Our team is out presenting in Lansing, Detroit, Northville, and Whitmore Lake, bringing education and awareness directly to the departments and communities we serve.

πŸ”Έ We're also hosting Culturally Responsive Therapeutic Strategies for First Responder Clinician Conference in Detroit, helping clinicians build the skills to better support the first responders who trust them with their care.

Presentations. Trainings. Conferences. Events. Webinars. This is what showing up for Michigan's first responders looks like.

You leave the calls at the station. You don't talk about the bad ones at the dinner table, and you tell yourself that's protecting your family from all of it.

But kids and partners notice more than we give them credit for, not the details, just the distance. A quieter version of you at dinner. A shorter answer to "how was your day."

Compartmentalizing is a real skill, and it keeps you functional on shift. It's just not built to switch off the moment you walk in the door at home.

Your family doesn't need the call report. They mostly just need to know you're still in there, underneath the quiet.

You can spot hypervigilance in a rookie a mile away. Recognizing it in yourself, and what it's doing to your marriage, your patience, your kids, is harder.

That's what this training is about.

New episode of Minds on the Front Line is live.

πŸ”Ά This one's about the stuff that's hard to explain, why you can't shake a bad stretch of calls even when you're doing everything "right."

Dr. Danielle Taylor, clinical psychologist at Wayne State and FST5 clinician, breaks down what's actually happening in the brain and body when stress and trauma build up, and how it's different from just having a rough week.

We get into:
❓ The difference between a stressor and trauma β€” and why both matter
❓ Why hypervigilance, irritability, and sleep loss feed into each other in a loop that's hard to break out of
❓ What it actually means when your family says "you don't seem like yourself"
❓ What happens in that first conversation with a clinician β€” and why you don't need a diagnosis to start

One line that stuck with us: you don't need to know what's wrong before you ask for help. Sometimes it starts with someone saying, "You don't seem like yourself. Is everything okay?"

"We see a lot of stuff on a lot of calls that most people don't see in a lifetime."

That's the part outsiders don't see, not just what happens on shift, but what it costs to carry it. And for a lot of first responders, the thing that keeps them from talking about it isn't the job itself. It's the embarrassment. The stigma.

This first responder said it plainly: he knew he needed to talk to someone, and stigma was the only thing that almost stopped him.

If that sounds familiar, that's your sign. You don't have to be embarrassed to reach out.
