OUR NEXT MEETING IS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2026

We will meet in-person at the Detroit Public Library, 5201 Woodward Ave. Detroit, MI.

We will have a special presentation from the Wolverine Chapter 67, Women’s Army Corps Veterans’Association – Army Women United (WACVA-AWU). They will present, “No Mail, Low Morale: The Story of Essie D. O’Brian Woods, Army Women Soldiers from 6888 to Wolverine Chapter 67.”

Essie Woods was a member of the 6888 Battalion; subject of the movie, The Six Triple Eight.

The meeting will take place in the Friends Auditorium at 10:30 AM. The meeting is open to the public.

Happy Juneteenth—also known as Freedom Day!

Juneteenth marks the day when U.S. General Gordon Granger and his federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

After the Civil War ended in the spring of 1865, General Granger’s arrival in Galveston that June signaled freedom for Texas’s 250,000 enslaved people. That December, slavery in America was formally abolished with the adoption of the 13th Amendment. Juneteenth marks an effective end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
