I once knew a young man who made it all the way to the NFL.
Not high school football.
Not college football.
The NFL.
He had the talent. He had the opportunity. He had the dream that millions of people work toward and never reach.
Then a series of decisions changed everything.
Today, he cuts grass for a living. There is absolutely nothing wrong with honest work, and he appears to be happy. But every time I see him, I think about a question I often ask in my work:
What did it cost you?
Not from a place of judgment.
From a place of reflection.
Because every decision creates a future.
Some choices open doors.
Some choices close them.
And sometimes we don’t realize the value of a door until it no longer opens for us.
Whether I’m working with professional athletes, executives, organizations, or young people, the conversation is often the same: talent may get you in the room, but discipline, accountability, and decision-making determine what happens next.
Every choice has a cost.
The question is: Are we counting it before or after we pay it?
