Threads and comments have been posted providing “recipes” for infant formula. First, it has little to no nutritional value and can cause health issues for your little. Second, if you are finding yourself low on formula please reach out. We can assist in identifying resources.
There has been some disturbing misinformation circulating on social media the last few days regarding "old school" ways to feed babies in the wake of the government shutdown, and we felt the need to address it. Please be aware, there is no safe alternative to human milk or commercial infant formula for feeding babies. Human milk is the preferred method for feeding human babies, but if that is not an option - Michigan WIC is still operational during the shutdown according to their website, and their income guidelines are higher than most people realize. If you do not qualify for WIC, there are food pantries and churches as well as websites like Freecycle that often have formula available. Also, all infant formulas must follow certain guidelines and many store-brand formulas have the exact same ingredient list as the name brands, but at a fraction of the cost.
We know that this is a stressful time of uncertainty and worrying about whether or not you can feed your baby can be very scary. We would love it if all babies were breastfed, but even if this is not the case, we want to be sure that every baby has access to a safe food supply.
