This AMA article highlights an important shift in healthcare leadership — recognizing physician well-being as essential to delivering outstanding patient care, advancing innovation, and sustaining excellence in medicine.

We are proud to see Dr. Steven Kalkanis, CEO of the Henry Ford Medical Group, featured in this national conversation. As a neurosurgeon at Henry Ford Health and a driving force behind the success and future growth of the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center, Dr. Kalkanis continues to lead with vision, compassion, and a commitment to both patients and care teams.

Strong physician leadership and support create stronger outcomes for patients, families, and the future of healthcare.

ICYMI: Doctors at Henry Ford Health in Detroit have performed the world’s first GammaTile procedure on a spinal tumor — an extraordinary milestone in innovation and patient-centered care.

This achievement reflects the dedication, creativity, and compassion of Dr. Robin, Dr. Siddiqui, and Dr. Doemer, along with the outstanding partnership of Alexandra Moceri and the Henry Ford Innovation Institute, and the leadership and oversight of Lisa Scarpace, who championed this vision from concept to reality.

Together, this multidisciplinary team approached an exceptionally challenging case with determination and ingenuity to provide hope for a patient experiencing significant pain who had exhausted additional therapy options.

What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is the collaboration behind it. The patient himself was a 3D-printing hobbyist, and this partnership demonstrated how personalized innovation, advanced technology, and surgical expertise can come together to create entirely new possibilities in care.

This success is a powerful example of how teamwork, innovation, and compassion can directly impact patient outcomes and improve lives. We are incredibly proud of everyone involved and grateful for their continued commitment to advancing the future of brain and spine tumor care at the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center and Henry Ford Health.

A team at Henry Ford Health in Detroit has performed what is believed to be a world-first procedure, adapting a brain cancer technology to treat a spinal tumor.
