Meet O'Jizo — three musicians from Tokyo, Japan who have dedicated their lives to Irish traditional music. And they're coming to the AOH on August 11.

Their story is unlike any other. It began in childhood — with the magic of Tokyo Disneyland and Hollywood movies that introduced them to American music. That love led to advanced studies in ethnomusicology, experiments with classical and world music, and eventually a deep, lifelong commitment to Irish tradition. They studied in Ireland. They earned the title of Masters of the Tradition. They've shared the stage with The Chieftains, Altan, Lúnasa, Flook, and Beoga.

Featuring Irish wooden flute, tin whistle, piano accordion, bouzouki, guitar, and mandolin — their sound is as authentic as a session by a turf fire in County Clare, with subtle threads of Chicago jazz, world music, and the quiet beauty of Japan woven in.

They won the Robinson Emerging Artist Showcase. They were featured in Irish Music Magazine. They received a standing ovation at "Your Roots Are Showing" in Dundalk, Ireland in 2024. They crushed it at Dublin Irish Festival, Goderich Celtic Roots Festival, and Milwaukee Irish Fest. And in March 2026, they wowed Boston.

Now it's Michigan's turn.

It's c1930 and in this colourised photograph, four women of the Aran Islands make their way home from Mass.

They wear red petticoats stained with madder, a wild flower that grows across the Aran Islands. Three of them have thrown another petticoat over their heads, with the waistband round their faces. They did this when it rained, or to cover their heads at Mass. The other, younger, woman wears a heavy Galway shawl.

The Galway Shawl (in Irish Seál na Gaillimhe) was worn by women all over Ireland. They were relatively expensive and so reserved for special occasions and Sunday Mass. Underneath was usually worn a lighter, hand-knit or crocheted shawl.

In the 1952 film The Quiet Man, the Galway shawl was brought to the notice of the world. In it, Maureen O'Hara wears the shawl in various scenes and she liked it so much that she kept the shawl for herself after filming.

It was the Galway Shawl that inspired this romantic, old Irish ballad....

At Oranmore in the county Galway
One pleasant evening in the month of May
I spied a damsel; she was young and handsome,
Her beauty fairly took my breath away
She wore no jewels, nor costly diamonds
No paint nor powder, none at all
But she wore a bonnet with ribbons on it
And 'round her shoulders was the Galway shawl!

Today these original shawls are rare. Some are exhibited at the National Museum of Ireland or treasured and jealously guarded in private collections by the families of the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking areas). 🥰
