Meet Jake, our “Patient of the Month.” In early 2023, he went from having lower back and leg pain to complete paralysis from the waist down within 24 hours. Tests revealed a spinal cord bleed, leaving him with no feeling or movement in his trunk, legs, or feet. After a week in the hospital and a brief stay at another rehab facility, some sensation began to return. When his family moved to the Detroit area, Jake continued his recovery at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan (RIM). Starting rehab with almost no function, he attended physical therapy three times a week, including sessions on a functional electrical stimulation (FES) bike. “Seeing progress helped,” he says. “My RIM team was great, they always tried new things.” Jake rehabbed at RIM for two years, progressing from complete paralysis to walking with just a cane. While still working toward full recovery, he’s grateful for how far he has come and for the support of his RIM therapists.
