This year's Preston M. Hickey Medical Student Symposium is underway! The event, hosted by our Interventional Radiology Interest Group, includes keynote presentations, student-led oral and poster presentations, and an awards ceremony later today!

The event was founded in 2025 to showcase medical student research and interest in the fields of Interventional and Diagnostic Radiology. Presenters include students representing , , , and umichmedschool, as well as one undergraduate student.

The symposium is named after an 1892 graduate of the then-Detroit College of Medicine widely considered a pioneer in radiology.

STREET CLOSURE ALERT: As construction proceeds on Wayne State University’s new Health Sciences Research Building, the project is now entering a phase that will necessitate some short-term street closures near the School of Medicine.

The two primary closures are as follows:

Canfield Street east of Brush
Scheduled closure: Aug. 10 through Aug. 21 (subsequent weekend off-hour shutdowns will occur between Aug. 21 and Sept. 25)
Reason: Installation of new pedestrian bridge connecting the Health Sciences Research Building and Scott Hall

Brush Street north of E. Canfield
Scheduled closure: Aug. 24 through Oct. 5
Reason: Installation of new water and gas lines

Please note that these dates can shift based on weather and other mitigating factors.

Congratulations to Jiahui Ding, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s C.S. Mott Center for Human Growth and Development, who has received her first R01 grant as a principal investigator!

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health has awarded a new, five-year $2.4 million R01 grant to support research that aims to uncover how viral infections during pregnancy reprogram the developing immune system of the fetus, influencing susceptibility to infectious diseases throughout life.

The project, “Placental Responses to Maternal Viral Infection Drive Sex-Dimorphic Offspring Immune Reprogramming,” focuses on the placenta as a key mediator of that communication.

Senior medical student Carline Dugue discovered an interest in neurosurgery while a third-year medical student enrolling in her general surgery rotation.

“While I have always been fascinated by neuroscience, scrubbing into a ventriculoatrial shunt placement procedure was my first real exposure to the field of neurosurgery,” Dugue said. “That experience inspired me to take a dedicated research year to explore the field further.”

Members of the Warrior MD Class of 2030 Red House were crowned champions in what has become a time honored tradition for our first-year medical students - the Warrior House Olympics!

This year's competition, a team-based, field day-style event in which the eight houses are challenged to best each other in a variety of games, was held July 17 at the Fieldhouse.
