Many parents wonder how therapy changes when a child has both ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

In this video, we explain how treatment strategies may differ depending on whether a child primarily struggles with inattention or hyperactivity, and why individualized therapy is so important.

You'll learn:

How inattentive ADHD affects learning
Why movement matters for hyperactive children
How therapists adapt ABA and learning activities
Why every child benefits from a personalized approach

If you have questions about your child's attention, learning, social skills, or behavior, we'd be happy to help.

Not seeing progress in ABA?

It doesn't always mean therapy isn't working. Your child may simply be in a plateau stage.

A good ABA team reviews data, adjusts teaching strategies, and finds what works best for each child.

Sometimes, one small change can make a big difference.

Instead of saying "Good job," try:
✨ "Great job sharing your toy."
✨ "I love how calmly you're sitting at the table."

Specific praise helps children understand what they did well—and makes them more likely to do it again.

Small wins build big progress.

🎨 Today, our campers came together to create a colorful Rainbow Fish.

This wasn’t just an art project—it was a meaningful opportunity to practice social skills in a fun and natural way.

As they painted side by side, the children learned to:
✨ Take turns
✨ Share materials
✨ Communicate with peers
✨ Observe and learn from one another
✨ Work together toward a common goal

Every shell represents more than a splash of color.
It represents patience, teamwork, communication, and growing confidence.

At Cogleap Summer Camp, every activity is intentionally designed to help children build meaningful social connections while having fun.

Because we believe the best social skills are not taught through worksheets—they are developed through real experiences, shared moments, and joyful interactions.

Sharing lunch.
Making art.
Climbing stairs together.
Creating crafts side by side.

What looks like everyday camp activities are often opportunities for children to practice:

✨ communication
✨ social interaction
✨ independence
✨ flexibility
✨ teamwork

Growth doesn't only happen during lessons.

Sometimes it happens in the moments between them.

We're so proud of all the friendships, smiles, and small victories happening at camp this summer ❤️

"Maybe they'll grow out of it."
It's one of the most common reasons families wait.

But it's also one of the things parents regret hearing themselves say years later.

If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts.
Early intervention is almost always the most effective intervention.

And a diagnosis isn't a label.
It's the key that unlocks the right support for your child.

Don't wait two years to ask questions.
❤️ When in doubt, reach out.

"He heard me. He's just ignoring me."

Actually... many children with ADHD didn't fully process the instruction in the first place.

When a child struggles with attention, impulsivity, or distractibility, they may miss important information even when they seem to be listening.

Try this instead:
✔ Stay calm and patient
✔ Repeat the instruction
✔ Ask your child to repeat it back

And don't underestimate the environment.

Homework at a busy dinner table with TVs, conversations, and distractions nearby can feel impossible for a child with ADHD.

A quiet, distraction-free workspace can make a huge difference.

Sometimes the issue isn't motivation.
It's attention.

If your child struggles with focus, following directions, or staying on task, early support can make a lasting impact.

Your first IEP meeting can feel overwhelming—but being prepared can make a huge difference.

Here are 5 common mistakes many parents make before an IEP meeting and how to avoid them:

✅ Read the evaluation report beforehand
✅ Remember that your voice matters
✅ Focus on your child's functional needs
✅ Write down your questions and goals
✅ Don't feel pressured to make quick decisions

You don't need to know every educational term to be an effective advocate for your child. Preparation, questions, and communication go a long way.

❤️ Save this post for your next IEP meeting and share it with another parent who may need it.

Will my child need therapy forever?

Probably not.

Behavioral therapy teaches children to:

✔️ Recognize when they're becoming distracted or impulsive
✔️ Self-monitor their behavior
✔️ Learn strategies to get back on track

The goal isn't lifelong therapy—it's independence.

When children can use these skills consistently at home, school, and in everyday life, they may be ready to graduate from therapy.

ADHD/ASD doesn't define a child's future. With the right support, children can learn the skills they need to thrive.

Many challenging behaviors happen because a child doesn't yet have the skills to communicate their needs.

Imagine wanting something, needing help, or feeling overwhelmed—but not having a way to tell anyone.

That frustration can often lead to crying, tantrums, avoidance, or other challenging behaviors.

One of the first goals in many ABA treatment plans is teaching Functional Communication—the ability to express wants, needs, feelings, and choices.

Communication can look different for every child:

✔ Pointing
✔ Using words
✔ Using pictures (PECS)
✔ Communication devices and AAC systems

The goal is not simply talking.

The goal is helping a child be understood.

When children learn to communicate:
• "I want that."
• "I need help."
• "I'm all done."
• "I need a break."

They gain confidence, independence, and stronger connections with others.

At Cogleap, we create individualized programs based on each child's unique strengths and needs, while collaborating with families and other professionals whenever appropriate.

If you're concerned about your child's communication skills or behavior, we'd love to help.
