CARE joins many in remembering Hayden Panettiere, who passed away this week at the age of 36.

In recent years, and most recently in her memoir, Hayden spoke candidly about experiences of relationship abuse, sexual misconduct and exploitation, as well as addiction and recovery and struggles with maternal mental health. In sharing these deeply personal parts of her life, she shed light on experiences that are too often accompanied by silence, shame and isolation.

We honor the openness and vulnerability with which Hayden shared parts of her story, and recognize the ways her words may have helped others feel less alone.

Her story reminds us that there is no single way to experience or respond to harm, and that every survivor deserves compassion, autonomy and support.
We remember Hayden with care and hold space for those who may be affected by the news of her passing or conversations surrounding her experiences.

Support is available.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Staff Denim Day Contest and to all who wore denim in solidarity with survivors of sexual violence. Denim Day is a powerful reminder that clothing is never consent. Through your support — whether a thoughtful contest submission or simply wearing denim — you helped send the message that victim-blaming has no place in our community, and that survivors deserve to be believed, supported, and met with compassion.

It was a very close call this year, and we are truly impressed with the creativity that every department that entered demonstrated in their submission. Without further ado, here are your 2026 Denim Day Contest Winners:

🥇 First Place — UCI Counseling Center
🥈 Second Place — UCI Latinx Resource Center
🥉 Third Place — LGBT Resource Center

Congratulations to our winners! CARE will be reaching out to arrange your well-deserved prizes.

CARE's commitment to fostering a campus culture rooted in respect, accountability, and healing doesn't stop at one day. Thank you for being part of this community and for continuing to show up for survivors. We can't wait to see what everyone brings next year!
