🧠💙 Understanding Interoception: The “Hidden” Sense

Have you ever wondered why some children don’t realize they’re hungry until they’re extremely upset, wait until the last minute to use the restroom, or struggle to recognize when they’re becoming overwhelmed?

The answer may involve interoception—our ability to sense and interpret signals from within our bodies.

Interoception helps us recognize:
🍎 Hunger and fullness
💧 Thirst
🚻 The need to use the bathroom
😴 Fatigue
❤️ Changes in heart rate and breathing
😊 Emotions such as excitement, frustration, anxiety, or calmness

When children have difficulty processing these internal signals, they may struggle with self-regulation, emotional awareness, daily routines, and independence.

At Thrive, our therapists help children develop interoceptive awareness through play-based activities, movement, mindfulness, emotional identification, and self-regulation strategies. As children learn to recognize what their bodies are telling them, they can better communicate their needs, manage their emotions, and participate more successfully in everyday activities.

Every child deserves the tools to understand their body and advocate for their needs. 💙

✏️ Building Skills Through Play and Purpose! ✋

Did you know that many everyday tasks rely on strong fine motor skills? Fine motor development involves the small muscles of the hands and fingers working together with the eyes to complete precise movements.

In occupational therapy, we target:

🔹 Finger Isolation – Using one finger at a time for tasks like pointing, typing, and manipulating small objects.

🔹 Motor Control & Coordination – Helping children smoothly coordinate hand and finger movements for improved efficiency and accuracy.

🔹 Precision Skills – Developing the ability to grasp, pinch, and manipulate objects with accuracy for tasks such as buttoning, coloring, and using utensils.

🔹 Pre-Writing & Writing Skills – Building foundational skills including grasp patterns, hand strength, visual-motor integration, and pencil control that support successful handwriting.

🔹 Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) – Strengthening skills needed for independence in dressing, feeding, grooming, and other everyday routines.

Through engaging, purposeful activities, children can improve hand strength, dexterity, coordination, and confidence while developing skills that support success at home, school, and in the community.

Every small movement contributes to greater independence! 💙

Sensory differences don’t always simply look like not tolerating textures or fabrics!

Some sensory differences require less sensory inout, or more sensory input for one’s brain to accept, process, and respond to those inputs appropriately!

In our OT sessions, we often try and help the client’s brain to respond to the level of sensory input that is most often encountered. This may look like tolerating the input received when wearing non-preferred clothing for clients who are over-responsive, or to register and respond to inputs that are generally missed by a client who is more under-responsive so that they are able to notice sensory inputs more easily!

Everyone has sensory health preferences, but everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their skin!

Now that it is warming up…finally!!

Water play is one of the single most powerful sensory play methods a kiddo can experience! Various water play activities can involve olfactory, visual, tactile, auditory, proprioception, and vestibular….and taste, too, if you let it!

Core strength is often an underestimated skill…and often a missed deficit!

Decreased core strength can present as increased movement or being “wiggly”, increased leaning on desk/table/walls, decreased fine motor skills, decreased attention to task, and more!

This impacts daily tasks, school demands, play skills, and overall independence!

Understanding emotions is a big part of our everyday lives! Both understanding our own emotions and understand the emotions of those around us. This skill plays into out empathy and our overall level of social skills!

When working on this skill with our clients, we use an evidence-based approach with The Zones of Regulation that was actually developed by an occupational therapist!

This curriculum uses colors and categories emotions by those colors. This method pairs a skill that most kids have mastered with a new and often complicated concept to help out kids understand the spectrum of emotions a bit easier!
