Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking, and behavior with symptoms that eventually grow severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. Even though the disease primarily affects individuals 65 and older, it is not a normal part of aging, and your risk can be reduced by staying active, eating well, engaging your brain, and other healthy habits.

Back to School season in Alaska brings shorter days with fewer hours of sunlight as we head into winter. Are your kids visible after dark? Be sure to keep them safe by using adhesive reflective tape on outdoor clothing, such as jackets, snow pants, hats, boots, and gloves. It's great for back packs, too! The BBAHC Environmental Health Department has reflective tape available for students. Call us today to reserve yours at (907) 842-3396. Be Safe, Be Seen, Be Reflective!

Talking about bad things that could happen, like a disaster or emergency, isn’t always easy. We may think we’re protecting the people we love by avoiding these conversations, but they are important to prepare and stay safe.

Starting a conversation today can help you and your family prepare for the unexpected. By taking simple steps, you can build your preparedness at your own pace:

• Set aside a time when everyone is calm and relaxed.

• Hold the discussion over a set time period, so decisions aren’t rushed, and people feel more comfortable talking about the topic.

• Talk about steps you’ve taken to prepare and encourage others to ask questions about preparedness actions that might work for them.

Lastly, be in the know, make a plan, build a kit, and be there for your community. To learn more about National Preparedness Month, visit: www.weather.gov/bmx/outreach_npm.

September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Raising awareness for this chronic disease and its symptoms is critical for the survival of those who are diagnosed and key to early detection. You can watch for some of ovarian cancer’s warning signs, such as long-lasting symptoms of bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, fatigue, upset stomach, heartburn, and sudden weight loss.

Together, we can support those who are fighting and contribute to continued research and awareness. Visit ovarian.org for more information.
