In 1922, Martin Barrett built the main building of "Barrett Hospital" in Dillon for $100,000. Joseph Shineberger and Margaret Roe also contribute

d $50,000 to create an endowed fund. James Guild, the table linens were sewn by the Methodist Ladies Aid Society and the Methodist Sunday School furnished canned fruit, vegetables and jellies. Hospital garments were sewn by the Ladies of St. Rose and towels for the operating room were hemmed by the Presbyterian Ladies. Other community donors furnished rooms, provided specific pieces of equipment and contributed financially to the construction and furnishings. "

This is an accounting of the original Barrett Hospital grand opening in 1922, which is taken from "A History of Healthcare in Beaverhead County". This publication details the very first settlers to the county and the physicians who traveled through or set up in the Beaverhead, centennial, and Big Hole Valleys. The original Barrett Hospital served the community for 50 years, and a replacement facility was completed in 1972. It underwent several extensive renovations, additions and upgrades over the next 39 years. Today, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare has a modern facility completed in 2012, with a team of Physicians, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, more than 40 nurses and more than 255 employees that provide services to more than 12,000 people in our service area.

After nearly 24 years of dedicated service to the Dillon community, it is with both gratitude and heartfelt emotion that we say farewell to Dr. Burke Hansen who will be leaving Barrett Hospital & HealthCare to begin a new chapter closer to family. As he shared with his patients, this decision comes from a desire to be closer to his mother during an important season of her life.

For more than two decades, Dr. Hansen has done far more than provide exceptional medical care, he has built lasting relationships, celebrated life's milestones with families, offered comfort during difficult moments, and made a meaningful difference in countless lives throughout our community.

While we will deeply miss his compassionate care, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to our patients, we couldn't be more grateful for the legacy he leaves behind. His impact on Barrett Hospital & HealthCare and the Dillon community will be felt for many years to come.

Please join us in thanking Dr. Hansen for his extraordinary service and wishing him and his family nothing but happiness, good health, and success as they begin this next chapter.

Wildfire Smoke Can Affect Your Health—Even If the Fire Is Far Away

Wildfire smoke contains tiny particles that can make it harder to breathe and may worsen asthma, COPD, and heart conditions.

When air quality declines:
🍃 Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) before heading outside.
🏡 Stay indoors with windows and doors closed when smoke is heavy.
😷 If you must be outside during unhealthy air conditions, wear a properly fitted N95 mask.
❤️ Children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with heart or lung disease should take extra precautions.

If you experience difficulty breathing, chest pain, or worsening respiratory symptoms, seek medical care right away.

🌡️ A parked car can become deadly in minutes.

Even on a mild day, the temperature inside a vehicle can rise 20°F in just 10 minutes, putting children and pets at serious risk for heatstroke. Cracking the windows is not enough to keep them safe.

Before you lock your car:
✅ Check the back seat every time.
✅ Place your phone, purse, or work bag in the back as a reminder.
✅ Always lock your vehicle so children can't climb inside to play.
✅ Never leave children or pets in a parked car—not even "just for a minute."

If you see a child or pet alone in a hot vehicle, call 911 immediately. Acting quickly can save a life.
