Our Mission

Barrett Hospital & HealthCare provides compassionate care, healing, and health-improving service to all community members throughout life's journey. Our History

"There may be larger hospitals but there will be none better." ~Martin Barrett
In 1922, Martin Barrett built the main building of "Barrett Hospital" in Dillon for $100,000. Joseph Shineberger and Margaret Roe also contribute

d $50,000 to create an endowed fund. James Guild, the table linens were sewn by the Methodist Ladies Aid Society and the Methodist Sunday School furnished canned fruit, vegetables and jellies. Hospital garments were sewn by the Ladies of St. Rose and towels for the operating room were hemmed by the Presbyterian Ladies. Other community donors furnished rooms, provided specific pieces of equipment and contributed financially to the construction and furnishings. "

This is an accounting of the original Barrett Hospital grand opening in 1922, which is taken from "A History of Healthcare in Beaverhead County". This publication details the very first settlers to the county and the physicians who traveled through or set up in the Beaverhead, centennial, and Big Hole Valleys. The original Barrett Hospital served the community for 50 years, and a replacement facility was completed in 1972. It underwent several extensive renovations, additions and upgrades over the next 39 years. Today, Barrett Hospital & HealthCare has a modern facility completed in 2012, with a team of Physicians, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, more than 40 nurses and more than 255 employees that provide services to more than 12,000 people in our service area.

Looking for surgical care with smaller incisions and shorter recovery?

Minimally invasive surgery uses advanced techniques to treat a range of conditions with smaller incisions.

For patients, that can often mean:
• Less pain after surgery
• Shorter hospital stays
• Faster return to daily activities
• Smaller scars

For many procedures, it’s a safe and effective option that can help make surgery feel more manageable. If you’ve been putting off care, it may be worth exploring your options.

As the school year comes to a close, we want to take a moment to reflect on the incredible opportunity Barrett Hospital & HealthCare had to partner with BCHS and the REACH (Research and Explore Awesome Careers in Healthcare) program this year.

Through hands-on learning experiences, mentorship, and behind-the-scenes exposure to a variety of healthcare careers, students from Beaverhead and surrounding counties were able to explore what it truly means to work in healthcare. From learning clinical skills and touring departments to interacting directly with healthcare professionals across our organization, these students brought curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm every step of the way.

Programs like REACH are so important in helping inspire and guide the next generation of healthcare professionals, especially in our rural communities. We are proud to support opportunities that allow students to learn, ask questions, and discover the many rewarding career paths available in healthcare right here close to home.

A huge thank you to all of our Barrett employees who volunteered their time, knowledge, and passion to make this experience meaningful for these students. We cannot wait to see where their futures take them!

Some health concerns can be difficult to talk about, even when they are common.

Urinary symptoms, changes in bladder function and men’s health concerns are often left unaddressed longer than they should be.

Starting the conversation is an important first step, and having a trusted care team can make it easier.

💚 Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

“Am I just getting older?”

It’s a question many older adults ask themselves when experiencing changes in mood, energy, sleep, or interest in daily life. But sometimes, those changes may be signs of depression, anxiety, grief, or emotional stress — not simply aging.

If you or someone you love has been struggling with:
• Ongoing sadness
• Increased worry or anxiety
• Changes in sleep or appetite
• Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
• Difficulty coping with life changes or grief

Please know: support is available, and you do not have to go through it alone.

At Barrett Hospital & HealthCare, our Senior Life Solutions program provides compassionate support for older adults navigating mental health challenges and life transitions.

Reaching out can make a difference. 💚
