🍁 Thanksgiving Allergy Tips from Alabama Asthma & Allergy Care Center, PC of Dothan, AL 🍁
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to gather with family — but it can also be a minefield for allergies, asthma, and food sensitivities. Here are a few quick tips to help everyone enjoy the day safely:
🦃 1. Ask about ingredients
Holiday dishes often include hidden allergens like nuts, dairy, soy, wheat, and eggs. Don’t hesitate to ask what’s in a dish — most hosts appreciate the question.
🥧 2. Watch out for cross-contamination
Serving utensils, cutting boards, and shared platters can transfer allergens. Keep allergic-safe foods separate.
🌰 3. Beware of “surprise ingredients”
Stuffing, casseroles, gravy, and desserts often contain nuts or milk. Even turkey can be injected with broth that includes allergens.
🌿 4. Bring a safe dish
If you or your child has food allergies, bringing a trusted dish is the easiest way to ensure there’s something you can eat.
💉 5. Keep your epinephrine auto-injector with you
Don’t leave it in the car or another room. Holiday reactions can happen fast.
🔥 6. Asthma tip: Watch for fireplace smoke, scented candles, and strong perfumes — all common asthma triggers at holiday gatherings.
🍽️ 7. For hosts: Label dishes when possible
A simple note (“contains nuts,” “dairy-free,” “gluten-free”) can prevent emergencies.
❤️ From our allergy family to yours — we wish you a safe, healthy, and joyful Thanksgiving!
