It is a general pattern that is pervasive through scripture and through life.
Jacob is a tent dweller and Esau a man of the field. Jacob gets Esau’s birthright through subtlety. Then the roles reverse for their maturity. Jacob goes out into the field and a Laban manifest in his life to mature him.
Esau goes into the secret place of the home to mature. Both end up being blessed by God. In the establishment Jacob will generally rule over Esau’s and in the field Esau’s will generally rule over Jacob’s.

Psalm 66:18-19
“If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.”
A crucial condition. “Regard” means to cherish, look upon with favor, or hold onto. If someone deliberately clings to sin in the heart—even while praying with the mouth—God will not hear that prayer. This is not about perfection or never struggling; it is about refusing to turn from known, willful sin while asking God for help.

“But verily God hath heard me; he hath attended to the voice of my prayer.”
The psalmist’s experience proves the opposite of verse 18: God did hear. The word “verily” (truly, indeed) underscores certainty. God not only heard but “attended”—He paid careful attention.

For better or for worse?

Maturing physically and spiritually have important parallels. Part of physically maturation comes from the recognition that you are a byproduct of your parents dna. To deny that is literally self defeating. That is why the Bible said not to curse your father and mother.
The same concept is in the marriage vow, “for better or worse.” You get to decide part of that, and there is also a part of that beyond your control. The power is in a decision, for better or for worse. You will have a fundamental belief about life. You will ultimately regard it as either for better or for worse.

Jesus Christ demonstrated this when he said all things are given me by the Father. What Jesus? All things? Birth in a stable? Herod trying to hunt you down as an infant? Being born in poverty? Being misunderstood by everyone around you? Having a small congregation of 12 and even one of them betrays him? Being forsaken by that entire congregation? Being publicly humiliated before Pilate and that angry mob? Being spat upon, flogged, nailed to a cross, and ultimately feeling forsaken by his own father that sent him on the mission in the first place! Yet at the end of the cross what does he say? Father, into thy hands I commit my spirit! For better or for worse? Jesus chose for better! Because of this,Paul could later write, “o death where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin: and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Many believers have heard God's Word preached for years and are still in the same spiritual place they were a decade ago. The problem isn't the Word. It's that the Word was heard but never meditated on. The seed was planted but never watered.

Out of the mouth of babes thou has perfected praise….

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Everyone we meet has some depth of knowledge and experience some profound gold of virtue brought about by the providential goodness of God.

The way to extract it is not by chipping away furiously at all of the rock that isn’t Gold but carefully investing in them until gold is struck.

This is a miraculous experience for both you and the individual whose heart you are mining. One because you have patiently taken the time to uncover the gold that you didn’t know for sure was their but but faith continued to ask, seek, knock and then you have found. Upon stinking gold in an individual’s heart both you and the individual will rejoice. One because you believed it was there all along and two because whether they believed it was there or not it has now been uncovered and the delight of such an experience is equivalent to Adam hearing Gods voice in the garden in the cool of the day.

Your child is a gold mine, help them extract the gold of Gods image placed within them at birth.
