Andrea suffered from a wound on her right heel that led to osteomyelitis, a bone infection that progressed to septic shock. Her health was further complicated by peripheral vascular disease, coronary artery disease, atherosclerotic heart disease, diastolic congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and hypertension.

She was sent to the ICU and received care, then transferred from the short-term acute care hospital to Kindred Hospital New Jersey – Morris County for continued care of her heel wound and additional IV antibiotics.

When Andrea was admitted to Kindred, the wound produced a large amount of drainage, which was managed with calcium alginate, and she couldn’t put weight on it. When the drainage decreased, the wound treatment was changed to Hydrofera Blue with improved wound healing. Kindred’s podiatrist told Andrea to ambulate with only toe touch on her right foot, and occupational and physical therapists worked with her to help her maximize mobility with the toe-touch technique. She did great following the doctor’s orders and ambulating with toe touch. By the time she was discharged, the wound was practically healed, and she could walk 100 feet with a rolling walker.

Kindred’s dietary team coordinated a meal plan to promote wound healing. After her first week, she was able to switch to a normal diet.

She was very excited to get back home, sit in the sun, eat a home-cooked meal, and continue her recovery, with a goal of walking alone again.

“Everyone here was great, and it was a pleasure to meet all of the staff," Andrea said. "The nurses and physical therapy were the best part of the experience.”

Rigoberto, a former military Reservist who loves to play Pokémon GO and spend time with his dog, came to Kindred Hospital New Jersey - Morris County after three days of abdominal pain. He also had a chronic left foot wound.

Upon admission, Rigoberto needed maximum assistance for bed mobility and edge-of-bed sitting. He was dependent for all activities of daily living (ADLs). Rigoberto had a very large, deep diabetic heel wound and a trauma wound above his foot.

Rigoberto was treated with negative pressure wound therapy, also known as a wound vac. He was given IV antibiotics. A special diet and nutritional supplement were given to help him meet the increased demands of healing and dialysis.

He was discharged on the same nutritional regimen. The heel wound had filled in nicely, and new tissue was forming. The trauma wound had formed a scab and was also healing.

At the time of discharge, Rigoberto was independent with wheelchair mobility and able to perform ADLs. Rigoberto received a lot of support from his mom and sister. He was very excited to go home and be comfortable in his own bed.

“My stay at this hospital was amazing," Rigoberto said. "Hazel, Dom, and Gabby are all amazing. I loved when they would come in the room and just talk. They were great company."

When Dominic arrived at Kindred Hospital New Jersey – Morris County, he was already exhausted from a long and complicated medical battle. What began as flu A and pneumonia at Pocono Medical Center quickly escalated. After a brief discharge home, he returned within a week in severe respiratory distress. Dominic’s condition deteriorated into atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response, congestive heart failure, recurrent pneumonia, and worsening hypoxia requiring high flow oxygen and steroid therapy. By the time he transferred to Kindred, he was facing acute hypoxic respiratory failure on top of chronic lung disease. Before this illness, Dominic lived independently on 6 liters of oxygen; now, even minimal movement left him breathless.

At Kindred, his recovery depended on coordinated, interdisciplinary care. Respiratory therapists worked to stabilize and wean his oxygen support. Nursing teams closely monitored his cardiopulmonary status and managed complex treatments. Physical, occupational, and speech therapists helped him rebuild strength. Progress was slow but steady, and the turning point came when Dominic transitioned from high flow oxygen to a standard nasal cannula at just 2 liters — a remarkable improvement given the severity of his illness.

“The staff was nice, gentle, amazing and helpful," he said.

For Dominic, healing meant more than clinical milestones. He looked forward to returning home to his wife, spending time with his grandchildren, and eventually working again at his friend’s car shop. His goal is to obtain a portable oxygen concentrator so he can move around freely.

Kindred Hospital is honored to have walked alongside Dominic in this chapter
and celebrate the strength and determination that carried him through.

In October 2025, James was admitted to Kindred Hospital after experiencing respiratory failure following a serious fall. He had a traumatic brain injury, a subdural hematoma with midline shift, and later underwent a left craniotomy. When he arrived, James was on a trach collar and needed moderate help for all mobility and daily activities. He also had a PEG tube and was NPO, meaning he could not eat or drink by mouth.

Even with these challenges, James was determined to recover. With support from the respiratory and physical therapy teams, he was gradually weaned off the ventilator. His progress continued as he began to move more on his own. Soon, he was breathing room air and needed only contact guard assistance for most activities. A major milestone came when he was able to walk 20 feet with a rolling walker.

On November 5, 2025, James passed his feeding test and was upgraded to a regular diet with thin liquids, a huge step forward. Although he still needed a future surgery to reattach part of his skull, his recovery was so successful that he was considered for decannulation. James stayed motivated, especially with the support of his wife and son, who visited daily.

James was later discharged to Burke Acute Rehab to continue building strength and independence. His goal is to return to traveling down south and walking along the beach with his wife, something he has looked forward to for a long time. He also hopes to welcome a Labrador retriever into their home, a symbol of joy and new beginnings.

James’ journey shows the power of resilience, family support, and dedicated care. He has come so far, and we are proud of his progress. We wish him continued success as he works toward full recovery.
