Paralyzed Veterans of America has released a new Clinical Practice Guidelines: "Outcomes Following Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury." It joins PVA's full library of Clinical Practice Guidelines covering everything from bladder and bowel management to pain, mental health, autonomic dysreflexia, and more — resources developed to help set the standard of care for people living with SCI/D.

Whether you're a member, caregiver, or healthcare provider, these guidelines are a powerful tool for understanding and advocating for the best possible care.

🦽A step in the right direction for manual wheelchair users!

🎉 Advocacy works, and this is what progress looks like!

For 10 years, Medicare rules have forced wheelchair users who need carbon fiber or titanium frames to pay the full cost out of pocket. On July 20, the U.S. House of Representatives took an important step toward changing that by passing the Choices for Increased Mobility Act (H.R. 1703/S. 247)!

This bill would require Medicare to create billing codes so wheelchair users pay only the difference for an ultralight frame, and it comes at no additional cost to taxpayers.

🧡 A huge THANK YOU to advocates across the country who helped make this possible! Your emails, calls, stories, and meetings with lawmakers, including your advocacy during this year’s United Spinal Association Roll on Capitol Hill, helped move this legislation forward. This victory belongs to you.

But we’re only halfway there. Now it’s the Senate’s turn. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R) and Senator Tammy Duckworth (D) are already leading the way as sponsors. Let’s keep the momentum going and get this across the finish line!

✈️♿️ Fill out the survey to help improve air travel for wheelchair users!

✈️ If you’re a wheelchair user who has traveled by air, I need your help!

I took my first flight with my power wheelchair when I was 13 years old. Since then, I’ve traveled to all seven continents and more than 50 countries, but flying with my wheelchair is still the most stressful part of every trip.

Every time I fly, I have to hand over my power wheelchair to airline staff and hope it comes back to me undamaged and fully working. Unfortunately, far too many wheelchair users know what it feels like when that doesn’t happen.

We need a future where wheelchair users can stay seated in our own wheelchairs, safely secured in the aircraft cabin. And to make that future a reality, lawmakers need to understand what we actually experience when we fly.

Cure SMA is collecting air travel experiences through a short survey, and your story can help advocate for change in the next Congress and future air travel legislation.

The SCI PFDD Meeting is an opportunity to put the priorities and unmet needs of people living with SCI at the center of treatment development and evaluation. You don’t have to be an expert or polished public speaker to participate. Individuals with SCI and care partners can listen, respond to live polls, and share comments throughout the meeting.

Every perspective helps the FDA and treatment developers better understand daily life with SCI, experiences with current treatments, and what the community needs from future research.
