โ€œWaitโ€ฆ PCOS has a NEW name?โ€ ๐Ÿ‘€

Experts are beginning to use the term PMOS instead of PCOS.
Why? Because the condition is often deeply connected to metabolic healthโ€”not just ovarian cysts or fertility.

The name PMOS (Polycystic Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) helps acknowledge symptoms like:

โœ”๏ธ Insulin resistance
โœ”๏ธ Fatigue
โœ”๏ธ Blood sugar concerns
โœ”๏ธ Weight fluctuations
โœ”๏ธ Hormonal imbalance

While the name may evolve, one thing stays the same: supportive, evidence-based care matters. ๐Ÿ’›

Nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management, and individualized treatment can all make a difference.

Did you know that many insurance plans cover the cost of nutritional counseling? And we are in network for many popular health insurance providers. Here are just a few of the insurance companies for which we are in network:

๐ŸŽ Aetna
๐Ÿฅ‘ Banner Health Network
๐Ÿค Blue Cross Blue Shield
๐Ÿฅ™ Medicare
๐Ÿฅ˜ Cigna
๐Ÿ‰United Healthcare
...and many more!

Health insurance companies have a variety of plans, so it's important to find out whether your specific plan covers nutrition counseling. Sometimes a medical diagnosis is required such as diabetes, kidney disease, high cholesterol, PCOS, IBS etc. Other insurance companies don't have that requirement.

Has the produce drawer in your fridge become the vegetable graveyard? Do you meal prep with good intentions but still find leftovers going into the trash? Whether you're looking to reduce food waste for the environment or to help your grocery bill, we can help.

Here are some tips to reduce your food waste at home from the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization:

๐Ÿ Only buy what you need. Sounds easier said than done, right? Plan your meals ahead of time to base your grocery list off of, and do your best to stick to it.

๐Ÿ Store food wisely. If you've ever heard of FIFO (first in, first out), that's exactly what we mean! Keep the older foods closer to the front of your fridge so they are used first, and your newer foods towards the back.

๐Ÿ Understand the labelling. If it's marked as "best before", you can still safely consume it after the date listed has passed. If it's marked as "use by", it's no longer safe to eat once the date has passed.

๐Ÿ Freeze your leftovers. This helps if you've made a recipe made a large batch you can't get through within a few days, and it gives you a back-up meal for a day in the future when you don't feel like cooking!

๐ŸCompost. Start a compost pile in your yard for banana peels, veggie scraps, and other biodegradable waste.

Stress and anxiety are common struggles for many people, and can cause side effects like blood sugar issues, weight, and digestive issues. Fortunately, the right nutrition can help you feel less stressed! ๐Ÿ’ช

Avoiding emotional eating, and eating a well-balanced diet is essential to managing stress and anxiety. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins provides your body with the nutrients it needs to stay energized and focused. ๐Ÿฝ๏ธ

Include complex carbs, magnesium, zinc and Omega-3 fatty acids to support mood stability. ๐Ÿฅ‘๐ŸŽ๐ŸŸ

Other practices like meditation, joyful movement, or being around supportive people can also help manage stress. ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ

Let's face it, carbs tend to be seen as the "bad guy" when it comes to food. But why? It's time to rethink our attitude towards carbs, which help provide the fuel our bodies needs.

Carbohydrates are 1 of the 3 macronutrients (or "macros") the body recognizes. Whenever you eat something, your body sees it as falling into at least one of those three groups. Each group has it's own function for our body, and carbs' job is potentially the most important one.

Carbs break down into glucose, a type of sugar, in the body. This is the ๐›๐จ๐๐ฒ'๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐š๐ฏ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐Ÿ๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ž๐ง๐ž๐ซ๐ ๐ฒ - our brain and nervous system work best with glucose. And that is EXACTLY what carbs do, give us energy! This is why the recommended intake for carbs is 45-65% of what you eat in a day, which is about half of all your foods.

Now what about the other 2 macros, protein and fat? While these two are important in their own ways, they don't break down into glucose for energy. That's something only carbs can do. BUT, they can help us to sustain the energy we're given from carbs, which is why

๐Ÿž- Breads, pastas, rice, cereals, and potatoes
๐Ÿ‰- Fruit
๐Ÿฅ•- vegetables
๐Ÿฅ› - dairy

These are all carbs in their own unique ways. Making grains and starches your only source of carbs narrows the variety of nutrients your body gets, so including all of these food groups is key.

Ready to find healthy ways to embrace the benefits of carbs? Meet with one of our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). We see patients all over the country by telehealth, or in person in our Arizona and Pennsylvania locations.
