Couple Forward

Couple Forward I practice curiosity about our inherited maps. Unexamined, they block intimacy and increase suffering. I deconstructed and left high-control religion.

Now 32 years married, three daughters, 20 years and 5,000+ couples. I think curiosity is the cure. We live in a relational world, and often our largest challenges center around our relationships. All of us have a global belief system in relation to our self and others. These core beliefs fuel our goals and shape the meanings we make about our lives. When faced with situations that fail to make sen

se to those internal stories, our relationships feel out of control, vulnerable, and stressed. Each one of us is on a journey, and sometimes the best choice is to consult a guide who can help us reach our destination. If you desire a vibrant relationship, I can help. I understand the art and science of love and can help yours move forward. I've been married for 22 years and have spent all of my adult life helping others achieve their relationship goals. I've been specifically trained and licensed as a marriage and family therapist, and I would be honored to help you too

Everybody in the room agrees love is the important thing, and no two people in it are describing the same object.

Ask yourself what love looked like the first time you ever saw it. A provision. A performance. A person who simply stayed.

That picture is doing more work in your marriage than any decision you have consciously made.

If a stranger followed the two of you for a week and wrote down who did what, they could reconstruct your parents' marriage without ever meeting them.

Ask yourself which of those arrangements you actually chose, out loud, as adults.

Most couples find one or two. The rest came with the house.

Ellis described his temper as a family heirloom, and said it with something close to pride.

His grandfather had it. His father had it. His nine-year-old already has the face that arrives just before it.

Nothing was inherited in the blood. It was demonstrated, nightly, by men who called it their nature.

What is your map of self-help?

What is your relationship to its target?

What if you changed the map?

I would offer that the framework of self-help as fixing something broken is an aperture setting and you are the camera operator.

You don’t have to leave it set on the manufacturer’s settings.

What if you remapped the framework as lifelong learning and becoming?

Not to fix what's broken. To liberate what's not yet free, to pursue becoming, with a different lens. HDR, OFF ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Use the map checks to remap your inherited maps today!

Long-form writing on the inherited maps of manhood, womanhood, partnership, faith, and success. Plus the MAPSS Check tool for examining one inherited script.

Ask yourself what an apology was for, in the house you learned it in. Ending the discomfort, or repairing the damage.

Those are two different tools and they are nearly identical from the outside.

One closes the subject. The other opens it. Most of us were shown only one, and never told which one we had.

You are loyal to a description somebody wrote before you were old enough to argue with it.

I have no willpower. I'm a starter, not a finisher. I've always been like this.

Loyalty is the part nobody names.
