The recent “teen takeover” at Wellington Mall, Clearwater, Fl among other states, which resulted in arrests and property bans, has reignited an important conversation about accountability. While social media can amplify poor choices, it cannot replace the influence of engaged parenting, clear expectations, consistent consequences, and positive role modeling.

As a mental health professional, I believe most young people thrive when they have structure, connection, and adults who are actively involved in their lives. Communities, schools, and law enforcement all play a role, but healthy development starts at home. Parenting isn’t about being a child’s best friend—it’s about preparing them to become respectful, responsible adults. When we invest in our children through guidance, boundaries, and accountability, we strengthen not only our families but our communities as well.

“Protecting my peace” sounds simple, but for a lot of us it was something we were never allowed to do.

Boundaries can feel uncomfortable at first.
Especially if you’re used to keeping the peace for everyone else.

But boundaries aren’t about shutting people out.
They protect our well-being, prevent overwhelm, and help us avoid burnout.

They’re about making space for your safety, your energy, and your healing.

Saying 'no' isn't selfish; it's necessary for balance.

Sleep changes are common as we age, but persistent insomnia isn’t something you simply have to “live with.” Difficulty falling asleep, waking throughout the night, or feeling exhausted despite a full night’s rest can affect mood, memory, concentration, and overall emotional well-being. Chronic sleep problems are also associated with an increased risk of anxiety and depression, making quality sleep an important part of healthy aging.

As a therapist, I often encourage clients to view sleep as a foundation for both mental and physical health. If you or someone you love has been struggling with ongoing sleep difficulties, know that support is available. Addressing stress, anxiety, grief, or other underlying concerns can often improve sleep and enhance quality of life. Sometimes, improving your mental health starts with improving your sleep. 💙

Depression is not a normal part of aging, yet it’s often overlooked because it doesn’t always look like sadness. In older adults, it may show up as fatigue, irritability, sleep problems, loss of interest in activities, memory or concentration difficulties, or unexplained aches and pains. For those living with cancer, surviving cancer, or managing another chronic illness, these emotional symptoms can easily be mistaken for the illness itself or the side effects of treatment.

Having worked in oncology before becoming a therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how a cancer diagnosis, ongoing surveillance, chronic health conditions, and caregiving responsibilities can affect emotional well-being long after the medical appointments end. Mental health is just as important as physical health, and depression is treatable at every stage of life. If you or someone you love has been struggling, know that you don’t have to face it alone—support is available, and healing is possible. 💙

Well Duh 🙄😜 Animals are always a great therapeutic decision.

For many people, companionship doesn’t come from a phone call.

A new international survey found that pet owners reported lower levels of loneliness than people without pets — even compared to those who had daily social check-ins with other humans. Researchers say pets provide a steady emotional presence that isn’t dependent on schedules, energy, or conversation.

That consistency, they found, may play a unique role in helping people feel less alone day to day.

The people I work with who've experienced gaslighting describe it as confusing. Feeling like they're always getting things slightly wrong. The conversations that somehow always end with them apologizing without being entirely sure for what.

That's by design. Effective gaslighting isn't always easily recognizable. And that is why it works, precisely because it's plausible. It borrows the language of concern, of reason, of love and uses it to dismantle your trust in your own perception.

Here's what can make it so hard to identify: some of it actually sounds reasonable. "You're being sensitive" could come from a genuinely well-meaning place. "I don't remember saying that" could be honest. The difference isn't the statement itself, . it's the pattern on when it shows up.

One instance of having your feelings minimized is a clumsy conversation. Ten instances, always in response to something they did, is a system.

What I watch for when someone describes their relationship isn't the individual moments. It's what those moments have done to them over time.

• Do they second-guess their own memory?
• Do they rehearse what they're going to say before they say it not to be clear, but to anticipate how it will be turned against them?
• Have they stopped bringing things up entirely because raising a concern costs more than swallowing it?

That erosion of self-trust is the real damage. Not any single argument that happened. The cumulative effect of being repeatedly redirected away from your own experience until you stop trusting it.

Choose You

There’s never a ‘right’ time. Now is your time to be happy. Stop spending all of your time making others happy, and allow yourself the chance to shine. Why wait for forever to come, when you might miss so many opportunities. Today is your day. Today give yourself permission to smile. 🫶🏻
