Sending love & grace to everyone who had a hard time the last few days. To anyone waking up today with a heavy heart, or with relief that it’s over. There are many reasons not to like the holidays, and all of them are perfectly understandable. Many of us are grieving, are physically far from family, are emotionally far from family, are battling illness, feel exhausted from having to do it all, don’t enjoy the memories that come with the holidays… just to name a few. Social media portrays many images of people surrounding a table smiling, trees filled with gifts, posts about their new baby, new spouse, new house, new dog… but what it doesn’t hold space for is for those who would love to press the eject button and end up on an island somewhere and pretend Christmas isn’t a thing! 🌴
I hope that you can find comfort in knowing that you are not alone, you got through it, and whatever you are feeling is perfectly okay. ❤️

When there is conflict with our loved one, there is always an emotional trigger. In couples therapy, the goal is to help each partner acknowledge and get to know these emotional raw spots, and then communicate them to their partner. This is not an easy process as sharing this vulnerability can be scary when we fear our partner won’t be accessible or present to us in a safe way. The next time that you find yourself “reacting” quickly in an argument rather than responding from a place of calm, check this list and see what may have triggered you!

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say that they don’t know why they feel anxious. It’s such a common, uncomfortable body response that happens sometimes automatically without our conscious awareness. It’s also very common that anxiety is trying to tell you something... whether it be “lets think of the worst case scenario”, “watch out!” or “Im worried you wont get that done in time”... An even more common anxious thought is... “What if it’s not good enough....” which is another way of saying, “What if I’m not enough?” When anxiety tells us to work harder, do more, second guess... it tries to protect us from feeling greater shame. The next time you feel anxious, try asking your anxiety, “What are you most afraid of? What are you trying to tell me?”

This is so true! Calm is not just a super power but hard work. Whether it’s in the midst of an argument with someone you love or in a stressful situation, remaining calm can not only get you closer to your partner but also repair your brain. There are many ways that you can practice staying calm but using mindfulness apps are a great start. Check out some of my suggestions below✨
🌱Headspace
🌱omgicanmeditate
🌱Calm
🌱Insight Timer
🌱Waking Up: Guided Meditation
Doing 15 minutes in the morning or before bed can actually strengthen the neural pathways in your brain to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system faster when in the midst of stress. It also strengthens the vagus nerve which helps us feel empathy! If we can create the time, we can reap the benefits!
