In the Yoga Sutras, the ego is referred to as Asmita (I-am-ness). Rather than pride, Patanjali defines ego as mistaken identity—confusing our pure, unchanging consciousness with the mind, body, or personal stories. It is one of the five Kleshas (causes of human suffering).
