Ajay Goel, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Molecular Diagnostics and Experimental Therapeutics at City of Hope, led an international study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology that may transform how colorectal cancer is screened.

The study, involving more than 1,600 participants, developed a blood-based test that detected 91% of colorectal cancers and 81% of advanced adenomas, the precancerous lesions that have historically been one of the most difficult targets for blood-based tests to detect.

Dr. Goel shares more on the study and what it could mean for patients in a new City of Hope Research News feature story.

One word describes Teresa K., a multiple myeloma survivor from Chicago: resilient. It's also the perfect word for her favorite team, the Chicago Bears.

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in March 2024, Teresa’s journey has been anything but easy. What began as chest and arm pain that she thought was indigestion quickly turned into a life-changing diagnosis. Through multiple treatments, including chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant, Teresa kept going, even when she wasn’t sure she could.

Inspired by the Bears’ determination during the 2025 season, Teresa and her husband watched every game, many from her hospital bed. “They never gave up, so I never gave up,” she said.

Following CAR T-cell therapy, which reprograms the body’s own immune system to fight cancer, Teresa now has no detectable evidence of disease and is in molecular remission.

City of Hope is a national leader in stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy. As the field of hematologic oncology continues to evolve, our team is proud to remain at the forefront of evidence-based treatments and innovative therapies.

Watch the powerful moment Teresa rang the bell on her last day of treatment!

One City of Hope patient broke their wrist in six places and needed a plate inserted. Throughout seven months of recovery, occupational therapist Frances Nguyen was by their side.

Frances built a plan around small, achievable goals, so progress felt real along the way. She explained how the wrist, hand, and fingers work together, and found ways to make the hard work feel lighter, sometimes even funny.

She came to every appointment already caught up on the patient’s condition and medications.

“She always made me feel as if I were her only patient, totally focused on our appointment,” the patient shared.

Congratulations to Frances on her BEE Award.

Hayley stepped onto the field with the Kenosha Kingfish to celebrate something far greater than a baseball game — survivorship.

A lifelong baseball fan and local equestrian, Hayley had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before taking a celebratory lap around the bases. Every step was a reminder of how far she'd come since facing breast cancer.

But the most unforgettable moment wasn't the first pitch. As Hayley crossed home plate, an unexpected surprise was waiting: the physician who helped save her life, Dr. Carolyn Bhakta.

The instant their eyes met, nothing else mattered. They embraced in a long, emotional hug that said everything words couldn't — gratitude, hope, resilience and the bond between a patient and the team who walks beside them. 💙

For Annette, life was filled with excitement as she planned her wedding. Then, at just 38 years old, everything changed with a diagnosis of stage 2B triple-negative breast cancer.

Instead of putting her life on hold, Annette chose to keep moving forward. She planned her wedding between treatments, continued working, celebrated saying "I do," and held tightly to the future she envisioned while navigating breast cancer treatment at City of Hope Chicago.

Her journey wasn't easy, but it was fueled by resilience, hope and the belief that cancer wouldn't define her story.

Today, Annette is celebrating life in ways she once only dreamed about. She's a breast cancer survivor, a passionate advocate and the proud mom of a beautiful baby girl.

Her message is one that continues to inspire:

"I will tell my story whenever I can. If it can change one person, that’s worth it." 💙

Whenever Blanca Monroy De Mena is on the floor, she shows up ready to make sure our units are in the best shape possible for our patients.

She gets in early, moves fast, and doesn’t leave a corner untouched. She notices the little things because she cares about the people they affect. Before entering a room, she knocks, introduces herself, and first asks for permission to clean. And if a patient needs help beyond what she can offer, she makes sure the right person gets there without delay in care.

Congratulations to Blanca on her BEE Award. Her compassion, hard work, and dedication do not go unnoticed.

A very special wish came true at City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago.

Throughout multiple cancer diagnoses and years of treatment, Bunnia has faced every chapter with remarkable strength and resilience. On hard days and good days alike, the music of country legend Randy Travis has kept her spirit lifted and her heart full.

A longtime and devoted fan, Bunnia had always dreamed of meeting Randy in person. With the love and determination of her family and friends, that dream became a reality when he visited her at City of Hope Chicago.

Their time together was filled with warmth, connection and the kind of joy that words cannot fully capture. We are deeply grateful to Randy and his wife, Mary Travis, for helping create such a meaningful moment for a cherished member of our City of Hope community.
